Job Description:

The Database Engineer will be part of the Global Database Engineering team, which is responsible for all the aspects of database administration on production environments. The responsibilities include design and maintenance of database infrastructure and customer environments as part of a managed hosting solution. Daily responsibilities include providing top level escalation support for SAVVIS Hosting Operations Engineers and SAVVIS hosting/Platinum support customers in their Oracle and MySQL DB Environment. He or she will also be responsible for installation, implementing High availability database environments, trouble tickets and troubleshooting of highly critical production environment with 99.99% uptime. He or she will also be involved in database performance tuning, implementing backup solutions and capacity planning. This person will work closely with other DBAs in a global team as well as application, systems operations and engineering teams. The Engineer will be working in majority with Oracle 11g/10g/9i/RAC/DG and MySQL 4.x, 5.x databases on Linux/Solaris/Windows.

Position Objectives and responsibilities
  • Maintain 99.99% availability for all Savvis Hosting products and infrastructure
  • Interface with other central organizations to improve and implement process, procedures and automation.
  • Pro-active and reactive performance analysis, monitoring, troubleshooting and resolution of issues.
  • Regular database capacity planning related to database growth and system utilization, trend analysis and predicting future database resource requirements.
  • Provide 24 x 7 escalation supports for Oracle and MySQL environment and for assigned account(s).
  • Participating in a rotating on-call schedule with DBA team.
  • Documenting the support procedure, change request, Project plans.
  • Provide fourth level escalation support forSavvisSupportCenter.
  • Provide Hosting Professional Services for customers with requirements that go beyond the normal scope of work.
  • Working closely with other team leads and their technical teams to ensure delivery of database services within the performance targets set.
  • Defining and implementing consistent standards across systems.
  • Defining database configuration standards related to performance and sizing for both transactional and data warehouse databases.
  • Mentoring and knowledge transfer to other DBAs
  • Strong knowledge of UNIX shell or Perl scripting languages.
  • Quick Learner and strong listening and communication skills.
  • Self Starter who can work in mission critical environment without any supervision.
  • Have ability and willing to plug-in in different DBA operations role across the company.
  • Work in any of the 2 assigned shifts (6:00 am to 3:00 pm IST, 2:00 pm to 11:00 pm IST).
  • May require working in either Mon-Fri, Tue-Sat or Sun-Thu weekdays schedule.
Critical skills:
  • Thorough knowledge of Oracle RDBMS 11g/10g environments.
  • 5+ years experience in Oracle Database Administration/support in Oracle RDBMS 11g, 10g, 9i in 24x7x365 production environments.
  • About 3+ years of parallel experience in setting up and maintaining production Oracle RAC environments.
  • Strong Database and RAC implementations experience and troubleshooting skills in mission critical Environment.
  • Setting up and maintaining Dataguard on 11g, 10g with MAA.
  • Experience with setting up and managing ASM instances.
  • Strong knowledge of Oracle Database Tuning and using AWR/ADDM.
  • Demonstrated, in-depth knowledge of database internals and data structures
  • Strong knowledge of SQL/SQL*Plus and understanding of PL/SQL and stored procedures/packages. Familiarity with Oracle's supplied PL/SQL packages such as dbms_stats, dbms_job, etc.
  • Strong Knowledge of Database Backup and recovery using RMAN and logical backups - exp/imp/expdp/impdp.
  • Thorough knowledge of MySQL environment. and concepts in versions 4.x, 5.x
  • 2+ years parallel experience in MySQL Database Administration/support in 24x7x365 production environments.
  • Strong MySQL troubleshooting skills
  • Strong knowledge of MySQL Database performance Tuning and identifying bottlenecks
  • Demonstrated, in-depth knowledge of database internals and data structures
  • Strong Knowledge of Database Backup and recovery using ‘myisam’, ‘innodb’ and mysqldumps.
Desired skills:
  • 1+ years of experience in setting up the high availability and MySQL clustering in v5.x. and MySQL replication
  • VERITAS HA Cluster Servers
  • Basic RedHat/Linux or Solaris Administration and Windows Sys. Admin.
  • Understanding of various 3 rd party database monitoring and administration tools
  • Understanding of OEM and Oracle grid-control.
  • Knowledge of MS SQL database administration
  • OCP on 10g or 11g
  • MySQL Database Administrator Certification
Education or Equivalent Experience:
  • Four years college degree in computer science or equivalent
