The Junior Security Engineer with be responsible for maintaining a safe, secure, and reliable computing environment for DreamHost customers. They will ensure the secure operation of the in-house computer systems, servers, and network connections. This includes checking server and firewall logs, scrutinizing network traffic, establishing and updating virus scans, and troubleshooting. This person will also analyze and resolve security breaches and vulnerability issues in a timely and accurate fashion, and conduct user activity audits where required.

Responsibilities
  • Respond to incoming security-related issues
  • Provide detailed reports on effectiveness of mitigation methods and attacker trends
  • Keep apprised of new security trends and mitigation techniques
  • Work alongside the System Administration and Abuse teams to implement best-in- class security measures
  • Design and implement new safeguards to protect customer websites and accounts from new and existing threats

Required Skills
  • A flexible attitude and the ability to work well under pressure
  • A strong sense of ethics and the desire to make the internet a safer place
  • Ability to maintain patience in stressful situations
  • Good judgement and decision-making skills
  • Strong ability to think and work independently
  • Perl (or similar scripting language) experience is a strong plus
  • Familiarity with standard security/troubleshooting tools (Nessus, Nmap, tcpdump/ wireshark, snort, burp)
  • Experience with mod_security or other WAF a strong plus
  • Linux (preferably Debian/Ubuntu)
  • Programming/debugging experience (C/C++ preferred)

Required Experience
  • Three years experience in a security response or system administration role
  • Ability to explain technical details in a clear and concise manner
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Web hosting experience (either as a customer or a provider) preferred
  • Some experience as an open-source contributor preferred
