The Senior Systems Programmer:
  • Is a senior-level position
  • Should have developed, through education and/or practical experience, an advanced-level operational knowledge of Information Technology (IT)
  • Should demonstrate the ability to lead by example and promote teamwork in projects
  • Should have the skills to handle complex technical problems with little supervision, and interact with a wide variety of Premier Health Partners (PHP) personnel, vendors, and consultants
  • Receives assignments and direction from management as designated within the reporting structure of the most current organization chart
  • Provides technical assistance to Systems Programming peers, other staff, and consultants
Responsibilities:
The Senior Systems Programmer is responsible for:
  • Providing advanced-level installation, administration, and maintenance of one or more of the following operating systems (z/OS / MVS, AIX / Unix, I5/OS / OS/400, Linux, etc.) and the hardware being utilized to run the operating system, systems software / applications, and enterprise storage solutions (SAN, Tape Libraries, Optical, etc.)
  • Providing advanced support and trouble isolation of enterprise-level servers
  • Providing input to annual operating and capital budget for PHP Systems environment in correlation with the organization’s needs and strategic plan
  • Participating in and/or leading IT projects. Project participation may include everything from project definition through implementation and follow-up.
  • Being an independent and highly performing member of the technical staff, offering technical solutions and problem resolution
  • Leading teams of other Server Analysts
  • Independently working on relatively complex projects
Qualifications

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Education:
Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Business Administration, Electrical/Computer Engineering or related IT degree with 6 years of relevant experience or an Associate’s Degree with 8 years of relevant experience

Licensure:
Not Applicable

Certification:
Certification for IBM z/OS, AIX, or OS/400 Operating Systems is a plus

Experience:
Demonstrates a high level of knowledge for installing, administering, and supporting zSeries, iSeries and pSeries type servers

Skills/Other:
  • Problem solving and analytical reasoning
  • Initiative and judgment to make appropriate decisions in potentially critical situations

  • Ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills
  • Requires little to no supervision
  • Ability to create user profiles using job descriptions/job classes, understand more detailed and complex security requirements, and be able to perform a system backup/restore using multiple tools
  • Ability to work under sometimes-stressful conditions in emergency situations or heavy workload
  • Physical strength and agility for such activities as moving/installing equipment, to a maximum of 100 lbs. in confined spaces
  • Willingness to stay as long as it takes to resolve critical problems. This is a 7-day by 24-hour requirement.
  • Willingness to travel between local sites
  • Willingness to carry and maintain provided communications equipment, such as pagers and cell phones, and to be available for on-call support
Competencies Required:
Basic Competencies

Microsoft Windows Operating System

  • Able to use PHP office suite (e-mail, word processing, spreadsheets, etc.)
  • Able to diagnose virtual memory allocation
  • Able to access and utilize log files
  • Understand Safe Mode and its different applications
  • Able to troubleshoot for virus and/or Trojan infection
  • Able to troubleshoot and repair Spyware problems
  • Understands Windows printing
  • Able to connect to and browse network drives
Intermediate LAN and WAN technologies and topologies

  • Understand Ethernet networks
  • Understand TCP/IP and PPTP routing protocols
  • Understand other network protocols as needed (i.e. SNA)
  • Troubleshoot routing failures
Systems Connectivity

  • Understand basic telnet and ftp
  • Understand various terminal emulations such as TN3270, TN5250, VT100 and XTERM
