POSITION TITLE: Medical Instrument Technician (EEG) GS-0649-08/08

This position involves the performance of a variety of specialized diagnostic procedures in the Neurodiagnostics Laboratory. Procedures include electroencephalography (EEG), Evoked Potentials (EP), Nerve Conduction Velocities (NCV), Transcranial Doppler (TCD), Intraoperative monitoring (IOM), and Video-EEG monitoring (VEEG). Knowledge required for this position will include one or more of the following, depending on the procedures to be performed by the technician: Registration or certification by the American Board of Registration of EEG, CNIM & EP Technologist (ABRET) or the American Association of Electrodiagnostic Technologists (AAET) in one or more of the above disciplines is strongly desired. Duties include but are not limited to: performing reliably all modalities of electroencephalograpy (EEG) examinations including special activation procedures such as hyperventilation, photic stimulation, and eye monitors using the International 10-20 system or other appropriate standards; nerve conduction velocity (NCV) studies including late responses and repetitive stimulation. The technician must be able to adapt most neurodiagnostic devices, parameters, and procedures to complex and innovative situations as required (including the operating room), and be able to interpret and justify in writing or orally the need and results of all changes.
Experience: At least 1 year of experience comparable tot he next lower grade level which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics related to the duties of the position to be filled. This would be experience which provided knowledge of the more complex procedures, the pharmacology related to this occupation, and knowledge of related acute disorders and diseases and their effects on organs and methods of treatment.
FOREIGN EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS: To receive credit for education completed outside the United States, you must show proof that the education has been submitted to a private organization that specialized in interpretation of foreign educational credentials and such education has been deemed at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education programs.
