The RTP team evaluates new servers, storage, and network equipment for power and performance, and works directly with OEMs and ODMs to improve and customize systems for Facebook. The Sustaining Linux System Administrator plays a critical role in working directly with Facebook’s vendors and data centers in the deployment, operation, and maintenance of new technology. Work includes building software packages, automating datacenter processes, and performing system tests. Additionally RTP supports Facebook’s hardware development, datacenter operations, and research teams. Responsibilities
Manage, configure, and maintain Facebook’s server fleet across multiple data centers.
Diagnose and root cause server hardware, system software, storage, and networking issues. Provide and apply workarounds and long term fixes.
Work with external vendors/partners to resolve hardware and firmware issues and develop tools and utilities.
Perform software upgrades in Facebook's data centers including BIOS, firmware, and drivers.
Develop process automation and tooling to monitor systems, collect data, and develop maintenance methodologies. Identify approaches that leverage economies of scale.
Communicate issue status and resolution terms to internal customers such as data center site operations team and Application owners. Requirements
BS or MS in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related technical discipline or equivalent experience.
Strong troubleshooting and analytic skills.
Experience in remotely administering hardware.
Strong knowledge of data center operations and processes.
Sound knowledge in linux operating systems, storage (RAID administration), and networking (TCP/IP, SSH, DNS, and DHCP) concepts and practices. Certification in linux system administration is a plus.
Strong bash and/or perl scripting ability. Python experience is a plus.
Ability to manage and drive external vendors.
Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
