The Academic Achievement Department seeks applicants for an Associate Director of the Writing Center. Reporting to the Director of the Center for Writing and Academic Achievement this position will provide leadership, innovation, and coordination in writing support services within a comprehensive academic support center staffed, in part, by undergraduate Peer Writing Consultants, Tutors, and Teaching Assistants. This is a 12-month administrator with faculty rank position.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Work collaboratively with the Associate Director of Disability Services and Academic Achievement to coordinate writing support services on a day-to-day basis.
Recruit, train, support, and supervise Peer Writing Consultants.
Provide resource materials and update and maintain consultant handbook.
Develop, implement, and oversee a Writing Fellows Program (undergraduate writing consultants embedded in content-based classes) in coordination with the Assistant Dean of Academic Achievement.
Maintain peer consultant work schedules and hold monthly organizational/supervisory meetings. Tutor individual students in special or escalated cases.
Develop and maintain the writing components of the Center's website. Administer, in collaboration with other College offices and during Summer Orientation, the initial assessment and placement of students into writing courses, using the method of directed self-placement, a model that maximizes student agency in the assessment/placement process.
In coordination with the Director of Academic Assessment, contribute to the ongoing, college-wide assessment of student writing across the curriculum. Contribute, in coordination with the Assistant Dean for Academic Achievement, to faculty training and outreach initiative in writing across the curriculum (and writing in the disciplines).
Teach three courses per year. These will include Basic Writing, Intermediate Writing, and Writing and Peer Consulting. In addition these primary teaching responsibilities, there will be opportunities to develop new courses and to teach in related fields, depending on individual interests and qualifications.
Act as a liaison with faculty to determine, develop, implement, and evaluate general and discipline-specific writing support and resources offered through the Center for Writing and Academic Achievement, which operates on a peer-consultant model. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
A Ph.D. in composition, rhetoric, or a related field and 3-5 years experience in a writing center or tutoring center are required. Candidates with an MFA and related experience and training will also be considered.
We are seeking someone with supervisory experience, as this position supervises Peer Writing Consultants and, in the future, will supervise undergraduate Writing Fellows embedded in selected courses across the curriculum.
