Reporting to the Director of Digital Library & Archives, the Digital Technologies Development Librarian provides technical leadership and programming expertise to advance digital library infrastructures, collections, and services through application development and applied research. The Digital Technologies Development Librarian will play a strategic role in advancing the libraries' digital information infrastructure and developing new digital library services. This librarian may be involved with applications such as, but not limited to, Drupal, DSpace, ETD-db, Fedora, ImageBase (a VT Libraries' developed application), LOCKSS, and other associated applications, tools, and specifications. 60% Working both independently and in team settings, provide technical leadership and programming expertise to advance digital library infrastructures, collections, and services through application development and applied research. Identify and develop new and existing technologies for these purposes. May be involved with applications such as, but not limited to, Drupal, DSpace, ETD-db, Fedora, ImageBase (a VT Libraries' developed application), LOCKSS, and other associated applications, tools and specifications. 25% Play a key strategic role in advancing the libraries' digital information infrastructure beyond its current status and significantly impact Virginia Tech's scholarly communication methods, digital library services and the management and preservation of Tech's digital intellectual output. Contribute to developing new digital library services through processes that emphasize usability and infrastructure sustainability and work with partners on campus and in library consortia to share solutions to mutual challenges. Will report to the Director, Digital Library & Archives and will assist the DLA Director in shaping overall technology development strategy and direction. 5% Collaborate closely with personnel from several library departments to achieve the goals of the position and the libraries. 5% Select and/or develop tools that support the ongoing assessment of digital library initiatives and services. 5 % Participate in library planning and serve on library-wide committees, task forces, and teams and will be expected to be active professionally and to contribute to developments in the field.
- Master's degree in Library Science, Information Science, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Management Information Systems, Information Technology, or a related field. -5 years experience programming in PHP, Python, Java or Ruby. -3 years experience administering a LAMP stack. -2 years experience in each of the following: -digital library standard Dublin Core -digital library standard OAI-PMH -digital library standard OpenURL -digital preservation standard PREMIS -programming DSpace based institutional repository -programming Drupal based web applications -programming Django based web applications -working with computing cloud such as Amazon, Rackspace, or IBM Cloud -1 yr. experience in each of the following: -any of these digital library applications: OPAC, ILLiad, SFX, or Summon -digital library standard OAI-ORE -any of these digital preservation applications: LOCKSS, PRONOM, or JHOVE. -Occasional travel to attend professional meetings and conferences.
