This is responsible clerical and legal office work. The employee reports to a division head and performs duties without close supervision.

Examples of Work Performed:
  • Takes machine or oral dictation and transcribes and types from notes. · Answers telephone, receives visitors, and attends meetings to and take notes and prepare the minutes. · May compute, record, and maintain files concerning financial, personnel, payroll or purchasing information. · Accepts appointments for supervisor and sets up calendar. · Types varied articles, reports, letters, forms or other material. · Prepares pleadings, opinions, briefs, ordinances, and resolutions as directed. · Completion of work assignments may require the operation of a vehicle. · These examples are not intended to be all-inclusive. Other related duties may be assigned as needed.
Requirements of Work:
  • Considerable knowledge of office practices and procedures, office machines, business English, spelling and arithmetic · Considerable knowledge of legal terminology and forms used · Ability to handle and understand legal matters · Ability to use a computer to access, interpret, and record information · Ability to compose routine letters and develop and refine internal office procedures · May require ability to make a passing score on a shorthand test · Ability to transcribe from machine dictation or written notes · Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, representatives of other organizations, and the public · Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing · May require ability to acquire and maintain a valid Kansas driver's license · An employee shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.
Required Experience and Training:
Two and one-half years of experience performing clerical duties, which must include experience in a legal office. Minimum of 65 words per minute typing on pre-employment examination. An equivalent combination of experience and training may be considered. Offers of employment are contingent upon passing a pre-employment physical, which includes drug screening, and upon satisfactory evaluation of the results of a criminal record check.
