Johnson Health Tech North America, one of the largest companies in the fitness industry, is seeking a Mechanical Designer – Plastics Specialization to join our sales team at our corporate office.

Position Overview

Under the direction of the Director of Engineering, perform a variety of technical assignments to assist engineers in charge in expediting the research and development of the more complex products and components, or involved processes and controls in the specific field of engineering.

Duties involve investigation, search, accumulation and calculation of supporting technical data through the use of texts, handbooks, records or other recognized sources requiring some degree of analytical ability and technique. Act as liaison between engineers and other departments. Prepare preliminary drawings or sketches showing proposed specifications, design characteristics, etc. for review by engineers. Assist with expediting the designing and construction of prototypes; plan instrumentation and arrangement of devices and apparatus to test pilot models, components, process or control sequences. Incorporate changes and solutions resulting from the engineer’s analysis and evaluation of the data as directed.

Duties consist mainly of technical assignments in direct support of engineers.

Qualifications

Education:
Two year technical degree or the equivalent of at least 5 years of equivalent experience.

Experience:
At least 7 years of design experience

Minimum 5 years experience w/ plastic injection molding

Consumer product design experience

Other Requirements:
Experienced 3D CAD designer (SolidWorks preferred).

Advanced surfacing knowledge and capability

Word, Excel, Power Point

Ability and willingness to travel both internationally and domestically (Approximately 4 trips per year.)

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Proven ability to work well with numerous diverse groups and individuals in difficult settings

Responsibilities

Personnel:
Work with other members of the product development team to translate customer requirements into engineering product specifications.

Liaise between Industrial Design and Engineering

Train and lead mechanical designers

Product Development:
Assist with technical reviews (brainstorm sessions and design reviews)

Develop and maintain estimated tooling/cost estimates

Support and trouble shoot the introduction of new products and in particular beta and pilot builds into manufacturing.

Develop new and improve existing processes, select materials, improve part performance, and source vendors

Coordinate with Manufacturing and Purchasing to ensure the product is producible and meets the costing requirements defined in the product specification

Determine and maximize container utilization and package size

Skills

Process Knowledge:
Proven experience with injection, vacuum forming, blow, gas assist, and rotational molding and their tooling

Understanding of insert molding, over-molding, dual injection, heat staking, sonic welding, and the application and limitation thereof.

Knowledge of plastic, rubber, elastomeric, and similar materials, along with their selection, limitations, manufacturing, and application.

Familiarity with numerous manufacturing processes: welding, forming, casting, punching, grinding, turning, lasers, drilling, etc.

Familiarity with numerous secondary operations: heat treating, plating, painting, etc.

Engineering Knowledge:
Advanced 3D CAD (including 2D drawings, 3D models, A-side plastic surfacing & B-side plastics design)

Familiar with DFMA

Tolerance stack analysis

Familiarity with the design and selection of bearings, shafts, transmission belts, sheaves & pulleys, keys and key seats, couplings, clutches & brakes, o-rings, retaining rings, springs, cables, fasteners, threads…

Familiarity with various materials and their properties: plastics, aluminum, steels…

Track record for designing parts and mechanisms of merit

Market Knowledge:
Consumer products development/engineering exp

Has worked on products requiring industrial design
