The College of Science seeks to fill a tenure-track or tenured faculty position. Appointment at the rank of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor is possible. Candidates with an interest in interdisciplinary research and teaching and with a strong background in computational science, modeling, or large-scale data analytics, from any relevant area are encouraged to apply. We seek candidates who will complement existing strengths in the College with areas of research including, but not limited to, mathematical, statistical, and physical modeling and simulation (deterministic or stochastic), complex systems, optimization, stochastics, data analytics, and data mining, physics and cosmology, computational geophysics, uncertainty quantification, or inverse problems. The successful candidate will be expected to establish an internationally recognized research program and be an effective teacher in graduate and undergraduate courses. Responsibilities The person appointed will have the following responsibilities: â?¢construct an internationally recognized, distinguished and vibrant, interdisciplinary research program; â?¢active and effective participation in undergraduate and graduate instruction and student advising with a focus on interdisciplinary science programs and degrees in alignment with the integrated science curriculum; â?¢active and effective participation in department and university administrative governance; â?¢adherence to the responsibilities of the general faculty as described by the faculty handbook ( http://www.provost.vt.edu). â?¢Other responsibilities include: continuing development of professional capabilities and scholarly activities, including travel to professional conferences; curriculum development; participation in department, college, and university governance; and professional service. Virginia Tech is expanding its presence in emerging interdisciplinary programs in computational science and data analytics, nanoscience, neuroscience, and systems biology. These new faculty positions signify a continued University commitment to the importance of interdisciplinary science to help solve major societal challenges in energy, the environment, and health. The successful candidates will have the opportunity to participate in the recently launched College of Science Integrated Science Curriculum (www.science.vt.edu/isc) which has the mission of preparing students as leaders in cutting-edge interdisciplinary science and building strong research and educational partnerships across its eight departments: biological sciences,chemistry, economics, geosciences, mathematics, physics, psychology, and statistics.
All applicants must have: strong promise for developing an internationally distinguished research program; senior applicants must have an internationally recognized and well-funded research program with publications in the highest-quality journals; demonstrated experience with interdisciplinary research and a strong background in computational science and/or data analytics; a desire to advise and teach a student body which is diverse with respect to socio-economic status, interests, and abilities; the ability to discern future trends in the discipline; vision, creativity, and leadership skills; awareness of interdisciplinary opportunities in science; willingness to engage various disciplines to tackle complex interdisciplinary challenges, and commitment/sensitivity to address issues of diversity in the university community. Applicants must have earned a doctorate in a relevant discipline at the time of appointment.
Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated examples of interdisciplinary scholarship, who advance the state of the art of computational methods and applications, or with experience in student-centered learning environments or interdisciplinary training programs. Preference will be given to candidates with postdoctoral or similar experience, with a record of achievement as might be demonstrated during a postdoctoral or previous faculty appointment.
