Req ID 271380BR Industry Job Title Research Manager for Laser and Laser Radar Job Code/Title L1485:Research Science Mgr Job Description Perform as the functional manager of R&D Science personnel for the Coherent Technologies organization of the Advanced Technology Center. The successful candidate will become part of the ATC management team reporting into the Coherent Technologies Senior Manager of Technical Staff and will be accountable for all associated personnel and staffing responsibilities associated with the execution of this broad optics-centric program portfolio. The Manager will lead this world-class organization to expand needed skills and capabilities while balancing staff assignments against projected need and available budgets.
Responsibilities include: supporting capture efforts inclusive architecture definition, WBS creation, cost/schedule estimating and the writing/review of technical volumes. Additionally, the Manager will be tasked to directly support select key programs in the area of technical contributions and/or project management, as well as aid in the development / implementation of an active optical product development maturity strategy. Applicant must be familiar with or be able to investigate existing capabilities of Space Systems Company for the development, fabrication and test of space based opto-mechanical sensors and subsystems. The successful applicant must be able to work with-in and across multiple SSC major functional organizations (MFO), with emphasis on the greater ATC. This Full-Spectrum-Leadership position will be responsible for establishing and maintaining a core capability of Science related support that will enable CT to fulfill its mission to be the preferred LASER Radar System provider for Lockheed Martin lines of business and our external customers.
The successful candidate must have demonstrated the ability to transition technology and research breakthroughs
into systems or products. The selected candidate will have demonstrated knowledge and experience in successful project management, and leading teams of technologists in the development of first-of-kind laser, electro-optic or remote sensing systems. The Manager will have demonstrated Full Spectrum Leadership characteristics, the ability to communicate a vision and strategy, and recognized success in establishing a team's technical direction. The selected candidate must be able to communicate complex ideas and explain laser-centric technology and concepts to an audience of both experts and non-experts.
The candidate must have an understanding of the design and development of optical and electro-optical systems
and their use in applications, such as: laser radar, active and passive remote sensing, imaging, directed energy,
electronic warfare, optical communications, spectroscopy and atomic physics. Basic Qualifications Experienced in end-to-end active optical remote sensor development or multiple related disciplines including: direct and coherent detection laser radar, polarimetry, Fourier/wave optics, radiometry, solid state and/or fiber lasers, non-linear optics, laser-based optical system design, digital holography, synthetic aperture, vibrometry, and 3D imaging
Experience in HW development at multiple levels of technical maturity; including new concept formation & analysis, first-of-kind laboratory demonstration, prototype development and field demonstration, and transition of developed technologies to initial products.
MS in science or engineering.
Minimum of 5 years of demonstrated successful leadership of technical teams.
Active listener with excellent verbal and written communication skills with both technical and non-technical audiences, with demonstrated proficiency in preparing proposals and delivering technical presentations.
Proven leadership experience in either functional, technical or project management with a passion for leadership, the development of staff, and the ability to recruit and engage a world-class technical workforce.
Accountable Full Spectrum Leader who excels at leading change and creating a positive inclusive environment, is appropriately assertive, open minded, and able to work on both strategic and tactical levels.
Experience in identification and pursuit of opportunities for collaboration and new business, with demonstrated success in building effective business relationships and project teams, managing successful project execution, and providing technical and non-technical review.
DOD Top Secret or SCI clearance, or ability to obtain.
Minimum 5 years' experience in aerospace flight product development.
Ability to provide product development cost and schedule estimating compliant with FAR guidelines.
Demonstrated ability to multitask complex technical and/or programmatic issues. Desired skills PhD EE, Physics, Applied Math
Solid state laser build experience
Design and fabrication of highly engineered (high TRL) systems
Laser modeling experience (laser performance or ladar modeling)
Field related external and internal (LM) contacts/network, especially with greater ATC
Systems engineering experience in optical sensor development, with hands-on experience in delivering hardware / products
Demonstrated experience in project management (PM, IPT lead, CPE, CSE,?)
Ideally experience in both large product development organizations and small technology development organizations
Enthusiasm for new technology that fosters a creative, vibrant, and enjoyable work atmosphere.
Laser and NLO modeling software development (particularly in MatLab and LabView) of complex optical systems from first principles.
Strong mentoring skills and experience managing groups of at least 20 individuals.
Strong customer empathy with ability and willingness to pursue new business development.
Demonstrated commitment to leading innovation.
Appropriate degree from an accredited college, or equivalent experience/combined education, with professional experience and specialized training commensurate with assignment.
