Under the general direction of the Chemistry & Biochemistry Department's Director of Information Technology, this position serves a vital role of diverse Information Technology support for a large research-oriented academic department in the Division of Mathematical, Life and Physical Sciences within the College of Letters and Science. The Systems & Network Administrator is responsible for the design, implementation and management of the departmental network and undergraduate laboratory computing environment, and acquiring and maintaining the associated hardware/software and creating, coordinating, and implementing the department's policies and procedures regarding these systems. This position also acts as a backup to the Director of Information Technology as systems and network manager for department and research servers and systems. As part of these multiple, simultaneous and complex tasks, the Network and Systems Administrator sets operational and policy goals and provides leadership, coordination, independent judgment and creativity to satisfy departmental needs while remaining within available resources. In addition, This position serves as the primary point of contact for technical support within the Department's large and complex research environment. This position is responsible for the day-to-day operation of research and instructional computers, printers and network. A successful candidate: - Will possess extensive knowledge of Windows XP/Vista/7 and Macintosh OS X desktop environments. Will possess extensive knowledge of Windows and Macintosh hardware. - Will possess working knowledge of networking protocols (TCP/IP, SMB, NFS, NIS, SNMP, HTTP, IMAP, POP, SMTP, DNS and DHCP/BOOTP). Will possess understanding of network hardware configuration including routers and switches. - Will possess working knowledge of Unix/Linux-based operating systems and open source software, preferably server systems in a production environment. - Will demonstrate an excellent level of customer service and written and verbal communication skills. *LI-DH2
