Group Benefits is searching for a Disability Appeals Consultant to conduct the review and investigation of short-term or long-term disability appeals. In this role, you will render appeal decisions by: leveraging case management resources; analyzing contractual provisions and legal guidelines for appropriate application; and, exercising independent judgment while following best-practice claim procedures, concepts, principles, and protocols. As well as technical experience in managing disability claims, the selected candidate will be able to manage quality outcomes in a fast-paced environment, know when and how best to engage necessary resources, and clearly and effectively communicate often-difficult messages to diverse audiences.
Responsibilities:
Communicate with claimants, employers, attorneys and various medical professionals to gather information to assist in rendering final appeal determinations.
Conduct investigations to determine whether to uphold or overturn appeals.
Evaluate and refer appropriate claims to risk management resources such as Vocational Rehabilitation, Managed Care and Fraud.
Manage claims within multiple funding arrangements and across field claim offices.
Document system and claim files on actions taken.
Provide training, guidance, and assistance to field personnel, as well as acting as mentor and subject matter expert to other team members.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience and a minimum of three years of disability claims management experience, including complex case management
Proven ability to positively affect return to work or final outcome of claim
Demonstrated problem-solving, decision-making, organizational, and negotiation skills
Effective written and verbal communication skills to gather and provide information in a clear and concise manner and to communicate with diverse audiences
