COMPATIBLE REQUIREMENTS: Selected candidates will be required to be a member of the Montana Army National Guard and in a compatible military grade prior to the effective date of placement. Selectee must be assigned to a compatible military specialty (MOS/AFSC) prior to or within one year of placement.

SUMMARY OF DUTIES: If applicants desire, a copy of the Position Description (PD) can be obtained from the HRO. A brief statement of duties from PD No. __ D11940 ____ . This position is located in the Joint Forces HeadquartersState, Logistics Directorate (J-4), Surface Maintenance Facility. The purpose of this position is to perform maintenance, repair, troubleshooting, inspection, and/or overhaul of a variety of combat, tactical, commercial, and special purpose vehicles and equipment.
BASIC ELIGIBILITY FACTORS: Document prior experience, education, and training relating to the General and Specialized Experience requirements . KNOWLEDGE, SKILL, AND ABILITY (KSAs) are no longer basic eligibility factors, but will be used as rating and ranking factors.
KSAs for SURFACE MAINTENANCE MECHANIC, WG-5801-08/10, D11940
1. Skill in the use of a wide variety of test and diagnostics equipment to perform fault isolation and conduct repair of combat, tactical, commercial, special purpose vehicles and equipment.
2. Skill in troubleshooting and performing services on heavy mobile equipment or vehicles such as bulldozers, road graters, tractors, combat tanks, cranes, etc.
3. Skill in repairing or overhauling minor and major components such as diesel, multi-fuel or gasoline engines, turbine engines, automatic and manual transmissions, drive line assemblies, electrical and electronic systems and accessories, fuel injection systems and emission control systems.
4. Knowledge of combustion powered engines.
5. Ability in electronics, sufficient to identify and replace defective components, such as sensors, diodes, and circuit boards.
6. Skill to utilize, interpret and apply parts lists, manufacturers repair manuals, technical manuals, diagrams, engineering drawings, diagnostic computer information, and schematics.
7. Skill in diagnosing, repairing, overhauling, and modifying a variety of combat, tactical, commercial, special purpose vehicles and equipment.
GENERAL EXPERIENCE :
Applicant must possess the general experience, education, or training which demonstrates knowledge of equipment to be able to do routine jobs, simple preventative maintenance tasks, and is able to use common tools and equipment in the line of work.
SURFACE MAINTENANCE MECHANIC, WG-5801-08:
Applicant must possess 12 months of specialized experience in:
SURFACE MAINTENANCE MECHANIC, WG-5801-10:
- Using common hand and power tools and a small variety of test and measurement devices to make mechanical repairs;
- Removing, adjusting, replacing, cleaning, and installing a variety of parts, components, and accessories;
- Knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic theory applying to vehicles; and skill to replace, fit, install, and make adjustments;
- Knowledge of the makeup and operation of the various individual systems maintained and their interrelationships; AND
- Reading and interpreting parts lists, manufacturers repair manuals, diagrams, and electrical schematics.
Applicant must possess 18 months of specialized experience in:
- Diagnosing, repairing, overhauling, and modifying complex vehicles, equipment, and systems;
- Knowledge of diagnostic equipment;
- Applying independent judgment in determining methods and techniques required to solve unusually complex maintenance and repair problems; AND
- Testing, inspecting, and evaluating the work performed on vehicles, equipment and systems.

PRE-EMPLOYMENT PHYISCIAL : Prior to full-time employment, selected individual must complete and pass a pre-placement physical examination.
DIRECT DEPOSIT PARTICIPATION : Selectee will be required to participate in Direct Deposit/Electronic Funds Transfer (DD/EFT) program as a condition of employment.
SECURITY CLEARANCE REQUIREMENT : Selectee is subject to attaining and maintaining a security clearance as required by the position.
