Mortgage Underwriter

SUMMARY

Reviews and underwrites FHA mortgage loans. Also reviews mortgage loans that do not receive an approved status in the automated underwriting system including first and second mortgages. Ensures all credit union, FHA and secondary marketing guidelines are met, reviews all denied and withdrawn mortgages & performs post audits on selected closed loans.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

Under the direction of the AVP of MHLP, the FHA Underwriter has the responsibility to perform the following essential functions:

Essential Functions:
Underwrites first & second mortgages according to GTE Financial, FHA and/or secondary market guidelines that do not receive an automated approval. This includes:

Clearing conditions on files prior to closing

Reviewing and evaluating information on mortgage loan documents to determine if buyer, property, and loan conditions meet establishment and government standards

Reviews and underwrites property appraisals to assure safety of our investment

Counteroffers loan submission to processors if submitted file does not meet guidelines

Reviews denied files to confirm course of action taken.

Reviews denial letters for accuracy

Reviews & approves new property appraisers & builders

Reviews loan requests from staff for exceptions to established guidelines

Identifies training needs and recommends a training program as identified in deficiencies discovered through post audits

Supports learning opportunities to enhance the performance of the staff

Work with Call Center Manager and Branch Managers

Ensures that loans are processed, closed and setup in accordance with FHA, investor and/or Credit Union guidelines

Must demonstrate a functional knowledge of the Bank Secrecy Act in addition to other Federal laws, including but not limited to: U.S. Patriot Act, Office of Foreign Assets & Control, Anti-Money Laundering, Right to Financial Privacy Act, and the Bank Bribery Act.

Performs other duties as assigned

OTHER POSITION FUNCTIONS:
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
  • Represent the Credit Union at trade events and informational activities.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Full time hours required, with additional hours as necessary to accomplish objectives, goals and projects.

Required Experience

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Must possess DE Underwriting Authority (Medallion) for FHA Mortgages. Must be detail oriented and possess excellent organizational skills; knowledge of FHA and secondary market guidelines a must.

Educational Requirements : Job related course work after high school, up to 24 months.

Previous Experience Needed : Minimum 2 years experience in underwriting FHA, FNMA and conventional first and second residential mortgage loans.

Computer Skills : Knowledge of Outlook, Word, and Excel preferred.

RELATIONSHIPS

In performing the above responsibilities, the FHA Mortgage Underwriter maintains the following relationships:

1. A VP of MHLP

The incumbent is accountable to the AVP of MHLP for interpreting and fulfilling the above responsibilities and others, which may be assigned.

2. Internal and External Customer/Member Relationships

As a service organization with a commitment to quality service, it is the responsibility of each employee to provide prompt, courteous, accurate, and professional service to both internal and external customers.
