The position of Health & Safety (H&S) Specialist assists in coordinating, implementing, and upgrading the overall program related to health and safety and environmental compliance and permitting (the program). Duties include creating and maintaining policies and procedures to maintain and/or upgrade the program, conducting frequent training sessions in topics associated with the overall program, frequent inspections of facilities, interaction with Facility Managers and employees on these topics and inspections, provides recommendations on corrective actions and clearly communicates the corrective actions to Facility Managers, conducting ‘due diligence’ inspections and evaluations as needed, preparing, updating, and maintaining all permits, plans, and procedures, and supporting Operations and other divisions within the company.


The core areas of accountability include but are not limited to:

Health & Safety (H&S)
  • Coordinate and implement the Corporate Health & Safety (H&S) program(s) at the field level
  • Conduct frequent (at least monthly) internal audits or inspections
  • Recommends corrective actions and assists in ensuring that corrective actions of areas of concern identified during inspections are taken
  • Investigate all incidents and near misses while ensuring proper follow up and implementation of corrective actions
  • Conduct frequent (at least monthly) training sessions in H&S topics
  • Spend time in the field working with Facility Managers and other employees coaching them on safety and compliance related activities
  • Assist in ensuring operational compliance with customer requirements
  • Assist in ensuring operational compliance with H&S regulations and requirements
  • Conducts and/or participate in due diligence audits, including those associated with new acquisitions
  • Assist in upgrading H&S programs through upgrading policies and procedures and/or establishing new policies and procedures
  • Update and maintain various permits, plans, and procedures
  • Interaction with regulatory agencies and/or insurance carriers as needed
  • Assist in reporting into customer and internal databases, such as ISNetworld
  • Assist in compiling H&S statistics
  • Assist in establishing measurable H&S goals for management.
  • Assist in compiling regulatory agency logs and forms for H&S reporting, including OSHA forms and DMRs
  • Provide support to Facility Managers on H&S issues and initiatives
  • Ensure that appropriate drug testing is completed
  • Ensure that Respirator Fit Testing is done on employees as needed
  • Assist in maintaining and calibrating all monitoring equipment
  • Promote an employee culture change related to H&S compliance
  • Research H&S requirements and issues
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Maintain and update Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), Job Safety Analysis (JSA), and Environmental Management Systems (EMS)
  • Maintain and update Safety Metrics and forward to Director on a regular and as needed basis
  • Check on and maintain facility binders with safety inspection and checklists
  • Assist in Subcontractor Management Program and Pre-Qualification Process
  • Assist in ensuring sub-contractors have appropriate and up-to-date insurance
  • Assist in ensuring that all necessary paperwork is completed
  • Coordination of PPE supplies by working with local suppliers

Working Conditions
  • Position requires approximately 50% of the time spent in the field.
  • H&S Specialists can expect to work up over 40 hours per week. In some instances, hours may be higher than 55-60 hours per week depending on work assignments.

The duties and responsibilities of the H&S Specialist are not limited to those listed above, but also include any additional duties and responsibilities that are assigned from time to time.


  • University or college degree in safety and/or industrial hygiene field.
  • CRSP/CIH/ROH professional designation or working towards professional designation
  • 5 – 10 years of health and safety related experience
  • Experience in facilitation of training and program development an asset
  • Competent in Industrial Hygiene and/or Health Sciences

  • Good working knowledge of EH&S legislation
  • Able to work independently
  • Excellent computer skills (very good with excel spreadsheets, word documents and Microsoft access database, e-mail, Power Point)
  • Creative approach to tackling problems
  • Good communication skills and interpersonal skills
  • Experience in adult learning and program facilitation
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Experience working with and implementing a Behavioral Based approach to safety
