The successful candidate in this important role will provide technical service and support for all of CPChem's Polyethylene (PE) Pipe products and applications. The candidate will assume responsibility for addressing customer technical issues and also develop and demonstrate uses and advantages of company products through application development work. The position will be responsible for coordinating all activities relating to customer complaint resolutions, new application developments, new product/resin developments and participation in major pipe industry forums and standards bodies. This position will be expected to develop solutions to technical and/or fundamental scientific problems where no precedence exists and where innovative approaches may be required.

This person must be a team player and will be required to interact closely with sales, marketing, QA/QC, research and development and plant manufacturing groups and personnel to address customer concerns and determine corrective action for customer follow-up. The candidate must possess excellent oral and written communication skills and will be expected to write detailed technical presentations/reports and maintain existing pipe technical literature (technical data sheets, MSDS, brochures, etc.) current and up to date. The candidate will also be expected to provide technical training for internal and external customers and perform additional duties as assigned.

The candidate must be well versed in Polyethylene resins and must have demonstrated expertise in all pipe conversion operations including gas pipe, M&I pipe, corrugated pipe and extrusion technologies. The candidate will possess a good working knowledge of typical competitive grades for these applications, their performance requirements and their basic property-processing trade-offs. Basic knowledge of structure-property relationships, fracture mechanics, crystallization, blends, plastics analysis, melt rheology and additives will be considered a plus.

Some typical responsibilities of this position may include:
Be responsible for complaints resolution

Provide trouble-shooting expertise to resolve customer product related issues

Work with other parts of the organization to determine root cause of product issues

Conduct field trials at customer locations and document the information in the Technical Service Contact Report

Conduct in-house experimentation for trouble-shooting and/or resin/application development efforts

Maintain customer and industry forums contacts and relationships

Consult on resin selection and use

Provide training to internal and external customers as requested

Work with plants/licensees on difficult technical issues

Prepare written presentations/reports and oral presentations summarizing project results. May be occasionally called upon to present results to business management.

Represent CPChem in industry forums and standards bodies to ensure that pipe standards are technically correct and relevant to CPChem business needs

Acquire recognition outside CPC through active leadership roles in PE Pipe industry groups and standards bodies (PPI, AGA, CSA, ASTM, ASME, etc.)

Support and recommend programs that relate to current/future business needs

Plan, coordinate and participate in project activities of the team

Participate in group safety program and activities

Participate in personnel development and recruiting

Lead/assist in developing new resins, resins specifications and/or new applications for the pipe markets

Lead a technology development team

Lead joint plant/technology efforts to resolve operating problems or to scope a plant project

Lead product evaluations to support R&D

Travel in support of job responsibilities may be up to 50 % of the time. This position is part of the Global Polyethylene Applications Group. This position will be located at the Bartlesville Research and Technology Center just west of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, 74003-6670.

Qualifications

B.S. (minimum) and 10+ years of industrial experience or M.S./Ph.D. and 5+ years of industrial experience in one or more of the following fields - Polymers/Plastics/Chemistry/Chemical Engineering/Materials Science. Work experience should be in areas of Technical Service and/or Product Development and/or R&D. Particular preference will be given to candidates who have a direct background in pipe applications and/or polyethylene pipe development/technical service.

Experience and knowledge in single and/or twin-screw extrusion and pipe extrusion. Additional knowledge of polymer processing operations like cast and/or blown film extrusion, injection molding, blow molding, thermoforming, fiber extrusion, etc. will be a plus.

Strong basic computer skills in word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, data collection and basic data analysis.

Good working knowledge and familiarity with Polyethylene resins and products
