We are seeking a Software Development Manager for our Merchandising Displays Division to mange development for our Display and Packaging system and other software based primarily on an AS400/ RPG platform and other related technology stacks.
The Software Development Manager role is to initiate software development projects, design software development plans, direct, and coordinate the design and software development activities, and supervise the technical environment over the software lifecycle. The role is responsible for enforcing and influencing the development of quality standards and development practices, arbitrating technical decisions, and managing to project completion and success. This includes developing, maintaining, supporting, and optimizing all new, existing and acquired software development projects and products, and the adherence to and enforcement of accepted software change management practices for compliance with IT General Controls under SOX. The role supervises and directs Software Developers and, as required, others (including Business Analysts). Working with IT leadership, the role will prioritize work in alignment with business priorities and IT strategy.

Creates software test plans and tests software for quality and conformance to requirements
Manage system validation compliance process and documentation required by third parties
Required Skills / Knowledge:
Prior experience managing a group of software developers utilizing RPG and DB2 on the AS400 platform.
RPG III/IV software development experience, including interactive and batch applications (5 years minimum)
OS/400 CL development expertise (5 years minimum)
Systems Analysis and Design experience (5 years minimum)
Ability to create functional and technical specifications, working with end-users to identify system improvements and changes and gain agreement on priorities.
Knowledge of sound software change management practices; ability to manage, control and schedule software deployments in compliance with IT General Controls under SOX guidelines
Software documentation skills; ability to write end-user documentation and release notes for software changes.
Strong skills on the OS/400 operating system, including use of SQL for data access / updates, file copies, library management, job management, printing, and other OS/400 functions.
Ability to design database and table structures to meet software functional and technical requirements; ability to create and maintain logical views of the data to meet data access needs and improve performance.
Extensive experience in building integration to/from other systems from the AS400 platform using various tools and approaches, including but not limited to EDI, point-to-point interfaces, and passing data through third party VANs and tools such as WebMethods.
Strong knowledge and practical experience with software testing; ability to recommend testing approaches, define and document test plans / scripts, and guide/direct the activities of others in performing test scenarios and documenting results.
Working knowledge of various project and software development approaches such as traditional waterfall planning approach, and Agile methods.
Exceptional problem solving and analysis skills with ability to quickly filter relevant facts and get to root cause, develop alternative solutions, and select and implement appropriate solutions rapidly.
Working knowledge of computing infrastructure (networks and servers) to the extent that it impacts the Display and Packaging / AS400 system and its interfaces.
Ability to serve on an on-call rotation for problem resolution.
Working knowledge of the MS Office suite: Word, PowerPoint, Excel, MS Project
Serve as a mentor and coach to those under direct supervision, and to others in the organization as needed.
Ability to interview and select appropriate individuals for the development staff, including both permanent and contract personnel.
Proactive approach to managing workload and resources; ability to identify and articulate resource requirements and proposed solutions.
Disciplined approach to work, but flexible to changing priorities and needs of the business
Desired Skills / Knowledge:
Experience with managing workload using SCRUM methodologies.
Experience with Turnover change management software for the AS400 platform
Prior experience working in the paper / packaging industry and/or Point-of-Purchase displays manufacturing businesses
Experience with Kiwiplan modules and/or building integration with Kiwiplan software.
Some will be required – less than 20% anticipated. Travel will mostly be to plant locations or RockTenn Corporate Headquarters
Education and Experience :
Secondary education degree in Computer Science, Business, or equivalent discipline – Required
A minimum of 7 years of experience in IT.
