The principal accountability of this position is to drive value creation through technology-enabled innovation across the CAPS Platform via cross-BU high-performance projects and customer–focused projects in areas not currently covered by BUs. The position holder will create value and realize cost savings that are a multiple of the holders’ employment cost. The position holder will also ensure the Platform derives optimum value from all its R&D facilities, especially the recently-opened Innovation Center in Wichita. In shouldering these responsibilities, the position holder will ensure the activities above are complementary to those of BUs and BU Technology Directors.
It is intended that this position will evolve to allow the position holder to be a player-coach for a BU without affecting the Platform role.
40% Innovation Connectivity Leadership:
Actively lead the development of commercially attractive cross-BU innovation projects in the customer space and high-performance projects such as packaging rationalization and possibly harvesting/carcass disassembly. Funds for these projects should be sought from the Technology Venture Fund or outside sources (Government sources such as USDA CRADA grants in the US, EU projects etc)
Appoint Customer Account Technology Leaders for customer accounts as appropriate; this approach, already in place for most major Food Ingredient & Systems platform accounts, will be extended in close collaboration with Food Service North America.
Represent the Platform in the Cargill Innovation Connectivity Group and help implement best practices across the Platform.
25% Technology Leadership:
Lead the development of the Wichita pathogen laboratory to perform analyses for all US-based Cargill BUs and subsequently to become the lead methods lab for Cargill globally. In the short-term, lead the transfer of pathogen projects (and funding) from Corporate Food Safety & Regulatory Affairs in Minneapolis to Wichita.
Build a portfolio of new food safety technologies relevant to all BUs that help establish us as the global industry leader in all aspects meat safety and secure funding from the Technology Venture Fund
Work with other groups in the Technology function and Corporate Affairs to develop a more proactive stance on nutritional/compositional issues, coordinated across Cargill, to anticipate threats and realize opportunities.
Develop a technology strategy that links BUs employing similar or related business models (may need several subsets for the CAPS Platform given different customers, regions involved). This strategy should clearly identify what we do (areas of focus) and what we don’t do (and disinvest from if necessary and/or leverage other core technologies/sciences in Cargill outside CAPS).
Represent the Platform at external industry and public forums/events/conferences
25% Talent Leadership:
Be responsible for top talent across the Platform, particularly corporately designated talent and BU Technology Leaders and oversee their career development
Develop succession plans for all senior Technology talent in BUs
Provide mentoring/coaching and performance improvement as required.
Act as the overall leader for all culinary resources Cargill-wide
10% Cargill Innovation Center Leadership, Wichita:
Be the focal point for customers, the community, and local city/state stakeholders. BU Technology Leaders will handle their customer visits, and the Leader would only be involved where large customers with multiple BU contacts are involved
Ensure consistent execution of food safety and EHS policies and optimal use of Cargill Innovation Center assets and resources, coordinate budgets as necessary, realize synergies etc. otherwise, NO administrative role.
Lead local shared services (food safety, regulatory, nutrition, culinary) and leverage these resources more widely across the Platform and Cargill where practical

BS degree in Meat Science or related scientific field
15 years experience in the Meat/Animal Protein industry
Experience leading a substantial and complex R&D unit and functional teams
Proven track record of driving innovation and new product development
Demonstrated ability to proactively build strong relationships of trust with platform and business unit leaders
Ability to build high-level networks with peers at major customers, university and research organizations including industry bodies and regulatory authorities.
Experience in adjacent areas such as animal nutrition and food ingredients would be an advantage
Travel up to 20%, with some international travel as necessary
MS or PhD academic degree in related science
Experience in leading R&D units in multiple sites or geographies.
International experience in another geography and culture
