The Systems Administrator is responsible for planning, installing, configuring, and maintaining server and storage systems and their components. The Systems Administrator ensures that systems operate in accordance with established NU and SoC policies and procedures. The System Administrator is responsible for ensuring server data integrity, monitoring and tuning operating systems to achieve optimum performance levels and minimal downtime. The Administrator ensures on-going maintenance, revisions, and additions to all infrastructure-related documentation.
The incumbent may be required to occasionally work outside of traditional business hours, including weekends and evenings. The incumbent must be able to physically move equipment such as computers, servers, and storage systems (in the range of 50 lbs.).
Installs, configures, and maintains the School of Communication's servers, storage, operating systems (Ubuntu Linux, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, VMWare, Windows Server, Macintosh Server OS, and other as appropriate), and software (Apache, SQL, PHP, and others as appropriate) that server critical SoC efforts in instruction, administration, and research;
Participates in the planning, design, and daily monitoring of systems;
Plans and conducts meetings with SoC faculty and staff regarding technology needs;
Analyzes system performance and resolves problems or makes appropriate recommendations to effectively manage all servers throughout their operational lifecycle;
Maintains policies and standard procedures to increase system uptime;
Works with other SoC IT staff to provide hardware, software, and networking solutions;
Ensures the reliable and secure implementation of automated server environments for hardware and operating system and their ongoing support;
Plans for expansion of server and storage infrastructure based on changing client and School needs;
Participates in meetings with customers, other teams in SoC IT, NUIT, and other schools/stakeholders both internal and external to the University;
Maintains an in-depth knowledge of operating systems and an educated awareness of evolving information technologies through professional publications, outside contacts, and ongoing professional development;
Participates in disaster recovery planning and exercises including backup/recovery procedures and higher availability configurations;
Mentors colleagues and student workers within SoC IT, serving as a point of escalation for support requests and a resource for relevant areas of expertise;
Maintains operational monitoring and security alert systems, working with other IT staff (both SoC and NU) to ensure that all appropriate patches are applied in an automated and timely fashion;
Performs related duties as required or assigned.
A bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or the equivalent combination of education, training and experience from which comparable skills can be acquired;
2-4 years' experience working with VMWare, Windows Server, Red Hat, Ubuntu, and Macintosh Server OS Systems.
A master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or the equivalent combination of education, training and experience from which comparable skills can be acquired;
5+ years of progressively responsible experience in the operation of enterprise-grade server and storage infrastructure;
5+ years of experience and expertise with VMWare, Windows, Red Hat, Ubuntu, and Macintosh OS software;
Significant experience in client systems architecture.
