Bachelors Degree required

The Medical Technologist is capable of performing all of the clinical laboratory tests in their assigned division. The Medical Technologist may perform routine tests in other sections of the laboratory, and assumes the duties and responsibilities of the Division Supervisor in his/her absence. This person provides direct patient care for patients of all ages. Successfully performs all phases (pre-analytical,analytical, and post-analytical) of all testing procedures in all areas of responsibilities within the laboratory. Satisfactorily performs all blood drawing procedures as evidenced by successful completion of the annual Phlebotomy competency Assessment. Insures quality specimen procurement with complete audit trail documentation including all Lab Information Systems as well as all available hospital systems. Acts as a resource for all medical/nursing staff regarding specimen requirements and other technical information. Accurately performs all lab procedures/tests using instrumentation and manual methods with minimal supervision and satisfactory completion of all competency requirements for all assigned areas. Performs and records Q.C. data with no exceptions as required by Department Policy and monitors and evaluates data identifying problems in a pro-active manner. Performs, records and reviews preventive maintenance and calibrations on laboratory equipment and instrumentation with no exceptions. Recognizes instrument problems, independently troubleshoots and consults with all technical resources and supervisor. Test results are validated prior to reporting and are available in a timely manner; advises medical staff and nursing units of alarm values and result changes following Department Policy. Maintains clean and organized work area, ensuring all reagents and supplies are adequately stocked and appropriate inventory is maintained. Ensures proper coverage and endorsement of work at shift changes as observed by lab management and demonstrated by efficient workflow. Participates in the training of students and lab staff including completion of appropriate training/competency documentation. Provides inservice education as needed. Provides flexibility in scheduling, exercises initiative to maintain optimal department operation and provides supervision and guidance in the absence of the supervisor.

Ability to perform phlebotomy preferred. Ability to perform manual testing procedures, and to operate and troubleshoot complex laboratory instrumentation.

One (1) year previous experience working in a clinical laboratory.

B.S. Degree in Medical Technology or a B.S. Degree in Biology, meeting requirements for registry eligibility.

MT (ASCP), or NCA (CLS) Certification or equivalent.
