The University of Alaska, Anchorage, Department of Mechanical Engineering invites applications for a tenure-track position as Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering (ME).

A successful candidate must possess a strong passion for teaching both undergraduate and graduate level courses. Candidates will have demonstrated the ability to: develop relevant curriculum materials; teach effectively in a classroom and laboratory setting; train the next generation of mechanical engineers; contribute through research, teaching, and/or public engagement to the diversity and excellence of the learning experience.

Candidates will have demonstrated the ability to: establish and sustain independent research; produce scholarly publications; maintain active proposal development; and to participate in and contribute to relevant professional societies.

The ME Program at UAA is a relatively new, ABET accredited, and growing program offered by the Mechanical Engineering Department within the School of Engineering. UAA is primarily an undergraduate teaching institution but also offers the opportunity to pursue research interests through both internal faculty development grants as well as external grants.

Anchorage is set between snow-capped peaks of the Chugach Mountains and the ocean waters of Cook Inlet offering endless outdoor recreation opportunities and unsurpassed natural beauty. Anchorage is within easy access to state and national forests, year-round outdoor recreation including hiking, cross country ski networks and world class salmon fisheries. Anchorage, with an ethnically diverse population of nearly 300,000, offers a lively intellectual and cultural life, including opera, symphony, theatre, art events, and varied restaurants, and shopping venues.

Knowledge, skills and abilities required for this position.

Teach both undergraduate and graduate level courses in mechanical engineering; establish a self-supporting research program; contribute to existing departmental programs; and advise undergraduate mechanical engineering students. Work with students on research projects relevant to the candidate's background.

Typical education or training required for this position.

Ph.D. in mechanical engineering or a closely related field by August 1, 2012, is required.

Earned B.S. degree in a field closely related to mechanical engineering.

Length of time and type of experience required for this position.

Length of time and type of experience required for this position should be appropriate to the rank of tenure track assistant professor. General background should be in related field.
