Performs highly advanced and complex engineering work in support of statewide bridge construction and maintenance activities. Work involves latitude for inititive and independent judgement. Work requires travel. Work involves contact with governmental officials, private entities, and the public. Employees at this level are virtually self-supervising and assume direct accountability for the work product.
Education and Experience
Must be licensed by the State of Texas as a professional engineer. (Professional engineers licensed in another state, but not currently licensed in the State of Texas, must (1) meet the license requirements of the Texas Engineering Practices Act, (2) obtain a professional engineering license from the Texas Board of Professional Engineers within six (6) months of the date of hire, and (3) sign an agreement to that effect as a condition of employment.) Must have six (6) years progressively responsible experience in transportation engineering, acquired either before and/or after licensing as a professional engineer. Graduate-level engineering education may be substituted for engineering experience on a year per year basis. (Experience requirements may be satisfied by full-time experience or the prorated part-time equivalent.)

Performs highly complex structural analysis of bridges.
Performs, reviews and checks special designs and solutions for unique structural problems.
Develops specifications for special bridge design details and projects.
Performs structural review of complex forming, false work and erection details.
Investigates materials failures or fabrication problems; reviews test data and assists in determining cause of failing materials; drives to perform these duties.
Provides assistance and technical support to districts, divisions and the FHWA in matters concerning bridge maintenance.
Inspects structures for impact damage and construction problems and may design emergency shoring to prevent collapse of damaged structures.
Makes presentations and represents TxDOT.
Prepares correspondence, and detailed engineering reports.
Develops or presents training courses and materials.
Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Driver 's record check will be conducted by the Department. Satisfactory driving records are required for driving state or personal vehicles and motor driven equipment to conduct agency business.
Must attend work regularly and observe approved work hours.
External final applicants for any department position who could potentially be required to drive for the department must pass a drug test prior to employment and will be subject to reasonable cause testing during employment.
External final male applicants who are 18-25 years of age will be required to furnish proof of registration or exemption from registration with the Selective Service System.
Successful completion of a post-offer/pre-employment physical exam at the employer's expense is required.
If hired, employee must provide document(s) within three(3) days of hire date that establish identity and employment eligibility. A complete list of acceptable documents is on file with the local Texas Workforce Commission office.
