Under the direction of the Security Supervisor, the Security Officer is responsible for maintaining the security of the hospital, outside properties and assets. The Security Officer manufactures identification badges using a computerized identification badge system. The Security Officer monitors various surveillance systems throughout the hospital and responds as needed. Position bears a 24-hour duty requirement with necessity for extensive patrolling throughout all the facility areas and must be alert for threats to the safety of the facility and personnel. The incumbent performs duties and tasks in accordance with performance standards established for the job. The incumbent is responsible for participation in and completion of all patient safety initiatives appropriate to the position. In addition, the incumbent conducts all job responsibilities according to the Mission and Values of Mercy Hospital.


A High School Diploma or GED is required. Education enabling the ability to read, write, and communicate effectively is necessary. Post-secondary training in security or law enforcement is preferred. Must have awareness of law enforcement rules. Must have good interpersonal skills as incumbent interacts with a variety of patients, associates, and public. Must have judgement and initiative to make rapid decisions independently with minimal guidance from the Security Supervisor. Must be accountable for decisions that may affect the security of the facility and safety of personnel. Must have basic computer skills and the ability to monitor security equipment and telecommunication switchboard. Must have a valid State of Maine driver’s license.
