Starting with job offers dated February 1, 2012 and after, Geisinger Health System will no longer hire applicants who use tobacco products, including cigarettes, cigars and chewing or smokeless tobacco. Applicants will be screened for nicotine as part of the pre-employment physical process. Nicotine will be part of the urine drug screen. Applicants who test positive for nicotine will not be offered employment. Applicants who test positive may re-apply for jobs with Geisinger in six months.


Supports the Cancer Registry by: 1) identifying reportable cases, 2) abstracting, coding, and inputting clinical data into a computerized database after review and approved by a Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR), and 3) performing lifetime follow-up to provide cancer incidence, treatment and outcome information.

Reports cancer registry data to the PA Cancer Registry (PCR) in compliance with guidelines and regulatory deadlines.

Performs duties to support the goals and objectives of the Medical Center in its efforts to provide quality patient care and patient satisfaction.

Works under the supervision of the Supervisor, Cancer Registry.


*Associate's degree in Health Information Technology or other allied health field or equivalent (60 college-level credits) required.

*RHIT/RHIA preferred.

*The above must include successful completion of 2 semesters college level Anatomy and Physiology or otherwise meet the eligibility requirements set by the National Cancer Registrars Association.

*Successful completion of college level Medical Terminology required.

*Prior hospital based cancer registry experience preferred.

*Will consider prior experience in trauma or other similar registry.

*CTR certification must be achieved within three years of hire required.

*Up to twelve months on the job training to become familiar with job duties and Geisinger Health System/departmental policies required.


*Demonstrates the ability to focus and review medical information for long periods.

*Demonstrates clerical skills to include keyboarding, data entry and familiarity with Windows-based software including Microsoft Office.

*Demonstrates the ability to adapt to changing regulatory requirements and work environment.

*Demonstrates analytic skills with attention to detail and high level of accuracy. Demonstrates and maintains 95% abstracting, casefinding, and follow-up accuracy.

*Demonstrates excellent organizational skills.

*Demonstrates effective communication skills with ability to perform as a team player.

*Demonstrates knowledge of AJCC Cancer Staging Manual, AJCC Collaborative Staging Manual, ICD-O3 and ICD-9-CM Coding manuals.


*Work is typically performed in an office environment with heavy computer use.
