The specialty nurse practitioner (NP/PA) in the ambulatory care setting (GI Medicine) works in collaboration with a multidisciplinary health care team. The specialty NP/PA is generally service/physician aligned, managing a distinct patient population in the outpatient setting. The NP/PA functioning primarily in a clinic setting may be required to perform some coordination of inpatient care and facilitate discharges/outpatient follow up. The specialty clinic NP/PA has a strong foundation in evidenced based practice/education and is responsible for ensuring adherence to clinical pathways/protocols and ensures an environment of safe quality care. The NP/PA demonstrates an advanced level of medical and nursing knowledge, clinical/technical competence, sound clinical judgment, professional communication skills, timely and compliant documentation, and responsible for professional development and competency validation.
The practice site is the Outpatient Inflammatory Bowel Disease clinic at the Vanderbilt Clinic. This practice provides services to adult patients with inflammatory bowel disease ( IBD ) including Ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. This individual will provide primary care to patients and families including nursing care and delegated medical tasks. The individual will work under the general supervision of a physician using established and approved protocols as required by institutional policy.
IBD patients are very ill and their management and care requires extensive physician and nurse time. NP/PA’s in this clinic manage immunosuppression, review lab work, handle patient phone calls, address messages to provide tele-health, and assist in other patient issues (correspondence and appeal letters). The NP/PA in this clinic is a vital part of a multi-disciplinary team. The ability to multi-task and excellent interpersonal skills are a must.
Job requires Masters and 2 years of experience or the equivalent. A Master’s degree and 3 years of experience is preferred. Physician Assistant with similar education and experience will be equally considered.
Licensure, Certification, and/or Registration ( LCR ):
Current- TN Registered Nurse; PA or APN license is preferred.
