Support and supplement the Director in managing the Brown Bookstore so that it fulfills its mission, services at a high level all its constituents and meets or exceeds its bottom line budget goal. This includes the direct management of the Finance office, customer service, loss prevention, shipping and receiving and the web operation team and working to reduce costs in all variable expense accounts. This also means consistently maintaining the Bookstore's physical appearance, assets and equipment. Serve as Senior Manager of the Bookstore management team. - Develop weekly payroll goals that are within the budget and that correlate to sales history and trends. Monthly plans should be developed that consider history, current trends special events, and calendar changes so that payroll is minimized with staffing levels provided that offer acceptable customer service. Weekly monitoring of sales and actual payroll should allow for adjustments as needed. - Monitor all expense accounts to assure budget compliance. Adjust expenditures to the demands of sales increases or to address sales shortfalls. - Seek out opportunities to refine procedures, policies and purchasing in order to reduce costs while maintaining or enhancing the store operations goal of continuous improvement. - Monitor the cashiering and customer service function to assure accuracy and a level of service that reflects positively on the Brown Bookstore. Tracking of error frequency and type and the use of generic class skus should be developed to inform an active and ongoing training program. - Monitor all aspects of the store's operations, including the daily attention, emphasis and focus on loss prevention to assure the protection of the store's assets and a consistently smooth running and efficient Bookstore operation. - With an emphasis on cross training, work to develop training that assures a knowledgeable staff that has the tools they need to succeed. - Ensure adherence to all Bookstore policies and procedures. - Foster a sense of urgency around goal attainment and improvement. - Maintain the store facilities so that we always present a high standard of cleanliness and general appearance and all equipment functions appropriately. - Address human resource issues immediately, fairly and according to University policy; Monitor corrective behavior. - Foster strong communication with the staff and amongst the staff. This includes being a consistent presence in all operational areas as well as throughout the Bookstore. - Foster good morale. Be a positive role model and look for opportunities to recognize good behavior and success. - Ensure that all front and back of the house systems are run well and accurately, Ensure compliance with all store regulations and that an accurate inventory process is maintained. - Work with the Finance Manager to monitor the office staff and to facilitate their continuous improvement and cross training. - Provide financial projections and results to assist in budgeting and budget adherence tracking. - Perform cost benefit analysis and develop budget models when possible to aid in decision making.
Bachelor's Degree or higher preferred Minimum of five years of management experience preferred Demonstrated experience with P&L statement and budget development and maintenance required Very strong management skills Proficiency with Excel and spreadsheet software Highly organized Ability to multi task and problem solve Ability to work with and across all University departments Flexible schedule Team builder Creative and innovative approach needed for operational issues Success driven individual with unwavering urgency for improvement
