Oversees operation, maintenance, repair, and user training for Bicentennial Hall analytical instrument systems; assists faculty and students with related laboratory research.


Essential Functions

Provides support for multiple analytical instruments and systems in McCardell Bicentennial Hall. The position will have its primary focus on a subset of the following systems, but will need to provide some level of support for all the systems on the list. Instrument systems include NMR , SEM , ICP , XRD , AA, GC, GC/MS, LC/MS, HPLC , MCD , FTIR , TGA , UV/Vis, electrochemical analyzer. DNA sequencers, particle size analyzers, SONAR devices, underwater ROV , observatory and telescopes, and other systems.

Provides consultation, instruction, and guidance to faculty and staff on use of instrumentation.

Coordinates and performs maintenance and repairs on instrument systems.

Instructs students in teaching and research labs on proper use of equipment and interpretation of results.

Assists students and faculty on thesis and research projects, including consultation on equipment design.

Works with other STSS technical staff to service existing equipment, fabricate new projects, and maintain building support facilities.

General Responsibilities

Must be able to work closely and interact well with faculty, staff, and students.

Maintains ongoing involvement in such professional activities as participation in workshops and training seminars.

Provides backup support for STSS staff in other areas, as required.



BS or BA in a physical science or engineering with additional training on specific instrument systems listed above. Some specific training may be taken after hire. Master’s degree preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Must know the core scientific principles and practices that are involved in NMR , XRD , and MSD systems and be able to analyze and troubleshoot problems with these instruments at all levels. Able to analyze and troubleshoot various electromechanical and electronic systems, including TTL & ECL devices. Proficient in operation and use of UNIX , Mac OS and Windows systems, application software, and hardware; some fundamental programming ability in one or more OS would be desirable. General skills in optics, vacuum systems, and use of machine tools (lathe, milling machine, bandsaw, etc.) will be helpful.


Minimum of 3 – €“5 years’ experience in use, calibration, maintenance, and repair of analytical instrumentation in a laboratory setting required.

Physical Demands

Must be able to crawl around, under, and into close-fitting instrument systems and cabinets, and be able to lift, shift, and move components weighing up to 60 pounds.
