The position of Software EngineeringCo-op within Rockwell Automation is a high energy, team-oriented and educational software development position. Students will work with software, firmware, hardware, and/or process engineers while developing software according to current software engineering methodologies. Co-op students are an essential part of the software development team and work hand in hand with professional software developers. Co-ops are given work that is integral to providing features requested by customers and ensuring customer success.

A senior-level mentor is assigned to each co-op student to aid in the student’s growth as a software developer and to ease the transition into the professional work environment. Regular progress reports are completed by the mentor and student and formal performance feedback is provided during the co-op term to ensure positive growth.

Co-ops become well versed in proven software development techniques and become comfortable in a professional software development environment. Students are exposed to a variety of software engineering knowledge areas including: OOD/OOA, full development life cycle, agile methodology, system design, test driven development, test automation, and build and configuration management.

Throughout the co-op term, students typically complete several projects in various areas of the software. Projects are assigned based on student’s interests as the education of the student is a high priority. To ensure student success in the co-op term, students are given many resources outside of a mentor, such as technical training and technical books. It is the goal of the software development co-op program to prepare students to compete for an entry-level software positions upon graduation.

This position will begin in January 2012.

Essential Functions:
In the course of a co-op term, a student will gain functional, leadership, interpersonal, and business skills within the framework of a professional software development organization.

 Functional Skills

Develops an understanding of relevant aspects of the department’s software development process and procedures.

Becomes familiar with the use of software tools required to analyze, design, debug and test software modules.

Becomes well versed in Object-Oriented programming concepts.

Assists developers with the design, documentation, implementation and testing of enhancements within the software. Assists developers with the isolation, repair and verification of defects within the software.

Assists with software product testing, namely unit and functional test, including regression test.

Provides work estimates and status reports to the technical lead and Project Manager as required. Maintains adequate interaction to ensure assigned tasks are prioritized appropriately

May assist Product Marketing with trade show preparation, sales tools, competitive analysis, etc.

Keeps informed of new developments in the software engineering and computer engineering fields by participating in technical and developmental training opportunities.

 Leadership Skills

Takes ownership of assignments by understanding expected output, requesting help as needed.

Conducts tasks in accordance with applicable health, safety, quality, and environmental regulations (state/federal laws, ISO9001, ISO14000, etc.) as well as Rockwell Automation policies and procedures.

 Interpersonal Skills

Effectively teams with others through mutually supportive professional relationships, open and direct communications, honesty and respect. Copes with and leverages personality differences and differences of opinion.

 Business Skills

Ensures thorough familiarity with policies and procedures relating to standards of business conduct, and trains and motivates others in the importance of full compliance with the letter and spirit of such policies and procedures.

Accepts additional responsibilities as assigned by manager. Minimum Qualifications Required Work Authorization:
Permanently eligible to work in the US.

Education Requirements:
College sophomore level or above; studying computer science, computer engineering or equivalent at an accredited 4 year college or university. Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.

Experience Requirements:
Basic computer programming (C++, C#, or Java) and application use required.

Good interpersonal, communication and teaming skills.
