Position Summary
In this position, the Media Relations Specialist is responsible for conveying appropriate messages and for generating ideas that will help build and strengthen the company’s reputation through effective media coverage.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Media Relations – External Develops and implements annual media plans for all levels of coverage and seeks out reporters across all media channels to pitch story ideas that build and strengthen the company’s reputation and support the organizations strategic objectives Develops solid working relationship with medical staff to ensure inclusion in building and strengthening the organizations reputation Proactively researches and writes communication pieces, interfaces with local publications to ensure a positive SVH image and maintains media lists, media spokespersons database and media calendar Provides support during crisis situations, including media screening, planning, materials development and serving as spokesperson Tracks and evaluates media relations projects and develop regular reports
Media Relations – Internal Participates in hospital functions and meetings that provide opportunities for gathering intelligence that is relevant to the success of the media relations function and assists with media advocacy for legislative issues Interfaces with other hospital owned or supported organizations, including staff and leadership at SVH affiliates and the system office, to ensure comprehensive knowledge of media stories Coordinates and monitors message delivery through multiple communication pieces
Media Training and Support Recruits, trains, tracks and manages relationships with media spokespeople Conducts media training sessions for administration and staff, prepares media spokespeople for interviews and coaches and directs others involved in media assignments
Education, Experience and Licensure/Certification Requirements Requirements are
representative of the minimum level of knowledge, skills and/or abilities necessary to perform the essential functions of the position Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or equivalent field of study required; Master’s degree preferred Minimum of 3 years practical work experience; Agency or direct media experience preferred Working knowledge of media and press relations and ability to build strategic alliances with members of the media. Demonstrated knowledge of journalism, print and broadcast and an understanding of daily media operations Working knowledge of healthcare field preferred Excellent planning, writing and presentation skills. Solid project management skills and versatility in responding to changing circumstances and priorities. Practical understanding of business and financial communications. Able to remain calm under pressure and balance multiple, simultaneous deadlines. Ability to communicate effectively and diplomatically within a multi-functional team Strong organizational skills and attention to detail Ability to successfully function in a fast paced, service oriented environment Experience in understanding and usage of computers, including the Microsoft Office Suite, as well as the ability to learn applications relevant to the position and ability to coordinate the dissemination of accurate information
