Senior Mechanical Engineer

Senior level aerospace structures design engineer leading the development effort of a satellite hardware program which may include spacecraft primary and secondary structures, instrument structures, and solar panels.

What you’ll do:
  • Take responsibility for all phases of structural design effort including requirements definition, program planning and tracking, detail design, manufacture, and test in order to provide a complete, verified structure to the program.
  • Provide direct interaction with analysis, production, test teams and other stakeholders in support of the design, build, and verification of the structures.
  • Provide direct interaction with customer and upper management and communicate at high levels.
  • Provide technical direction and mentoring to junior level design engineers and designers in the areas of conceptual design, detail design, materials selection, test verification, report writing, and drawing creation.

What you’ll need:
  • A BS degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering (or related technical field) with coursework in statics, dynamics, strength of materials, is strongly preferred, plus 8 or more years of related experience.
  • An MS degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering, or related technical field, is preferred.
  • 8 or more years of experience designing primary structures of spacecraft, instruments, or other aerospace-related hardware is required.
  • Proficiency with MS Office tools is required.
  • Good interpersonal skills, high level communication skills, and the ability to work effectively in a team environment are essential.
  • Proficiency in the use of SolidWorks or similar CAD systems for parts design and large assembly models is required.
  • Previous experience in the following areas is preferred: Aluminum honeycomb structures, Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics (CFRP) discrete walled structure design, subcontract management of structure components.
  • Proficiency with MS Office tools is required.
  • Previous experience with Silicon Carbide telescope structures is preferred.
  • A demonstrated ability to organize and lead large aerospace structural design efforts is desired.
  • TS/SSBI preferred.
  • In addition to the typical educational and experience requirements, a demonstrated capability to adequately perform the essential functions and responsibilities of the position and exhibit the skills and competencies of the grade level should be considered.
  • Each higher-level degree, i.e. Master’s Degree or Ph.D., may substitute for two years of experience.
  • Related technical experience may be considered in lieu of education.
