Performs a variety of administrative, supervisory, semi-skilled, and skilled work in maintaining the vehicles and mechanical equipment of the department.
Manages and supervises mechanics; plans and organizes workloads and staff assignments; trains and motivates assigned staff.
Performs or assists subordinates in performing duties; adjusts errors and complaints.
Lays out daily work schedules and assigns tasks to appropriate individuals and coordinates the completion of the same.
Provides necessary supervision, direction, and assistance to mechanics, assigned workers, and temporary employees. Enforces policies, regulations, and safety and health standards.
Prepares and maintains daily, monthly, and annual reports and records, as assigned.
Carries out and evaluates preventive maintenance schedules for all vehicles and mechanical equipment, either personally, or through outside vendors.
Oversees and inspects, adjusts and replaces necessary units and related parts in the performance of repair and maintenance work.
Oversees and conducts repairs on brakes, engine, electrical, fuel, hydraulic, transmission, ignition, air, exhaust, axle assemblies and related systems on all types of equipment.
Cuts and welds metal and performs body repair, touch up and related work.
Requisitions equipment, parts, and supplies used for vehicle and mechanical system maintenance.
Provides emergency field assistance to disabled equipment as needed and appropriate.
Maintains records, prepares reports and other specialized maintenance records of equipment and mechanical equipment.
Performs all of the duties of a mechanic, as required.
This position is subject to Yardmaster's Drug and Alcohol Free Workplace Program which includes: pre-employment testing, post-accident testing, random testing, reasonable suspicion testing, return-to-duty testing, and follow-up testing.
Graduation from high school diploma or GED equivalent plus some specialized training in mechanics, maintenance management, or a closely related field.
Valid Ohio Driver’s License with acceptable driving record for past three years required.
3-5 years of related experience preferred, or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
Extensive knowledge of automotive mechanics; thorough knowledge of gas and diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulics, fire pumps and valves, generators, and welding.
Thorough knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to fleet maintenance and repair activities.
Thorough knowledge of the practices, methods, materials and tools used in modern equipment maintenance.
Ability to maintain effective preventive maintenance programs, policies and procedures.
Ability to work all shifts, including weekends and holidays when required.
Must be willing to be on 24 hour call; must be able to be at the Painesville Service Center within reasonable time after receiving a call or arrange for another mechanic to arrive.
Ability to carry out assigned projects to their completion.
Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, vendors, and the public.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED
Skill in operation of motorized vehicles for mechanical testing purposes, power and hand tools and equipment for vehicle and mechanical system work; mechanic's tools including jacks, hydraulic lifts, air tools, and other tools required for minor repairs and routine maintenance of motorized vehicles; electronic vehicle diagnostic equipment; personal computer; calculator; phone; fax and copy machine, laptop computer, and various hand tools
