Department of English

Morehead State University invites nominations and applications for the position of Chair of the Department of English. The Chair provides academic and administrative leadership for the department and its programs and promotes excellence in teaching, advising, creative endeavor, scholarship and service to the University and to the profession. The Chair supports the mission and goals of the University and works with other stakeholders to implement the University’s strategic plan. The Chair reports to the Dean of the Caudill College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Represent the department within the University and community. Develop, update, implement, and coordinate teaching, research, and service missions of the unit. Administer budgetary, personnel, and program activities. Coordinate and conduct faculty evaluation reviews and make recommendations. Oversee development, implementation, maintenance and assessment of academic programs, including developmental education, general education and online programming. Lead and oversee curriculum development and revision. Coordinate faculty workloads, develop course schedule, and ensure compliance with applicable accreditation and state standards. Oversee student advising, fellowships, internships, scholarships, grant programs and facilities. Maintain and develop outreach programming and foster relationships with external organizations and entities. Participate in fund-raising and other cultivation initiatives and work to identify resources for new and existing programs. Perform related duties as assigned with some teaching expected.

QUALIFICATIONS: The Chair of the Department of English is expected to be a strong, visionary and collaborative leader with the ability to build the quality and stature of programs. The chair must be able to lead the recruitment of high-quality faculty and students, communicate effectively with the wider community and articulate a clear and consistent vision for the continued development of the Department. S/he is expected to build consensus, practice shared governance and value diversity.

The successful candidate is expected to have credentials consistent with the attainment of tenure at the rank of full professor in at least one field or specialization represented in the department, including the doctoral degree in a relevant field and faculty rank as a tenured full professor or qualifications for such rank within the department. We are seeking candidates that have demonstrated a significant record of success in college-level academic administration related to the responsibilities of the position. The selection process will focus on candidates who can effectively represent the department within and outside of the University, demonstrate sensitivity to and support for a broad spectrum of academic disciplines and teacher education, are skilled in promoting productive partnerships and collaborations, and have the requisite disposition and ability to enhance the quality, expand the reputation and enlarge the enrollment of the department and its programs.

APPOINTMENT: Professor. Full-time, 12-month appointment, effective July 1, 2011. Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.
