Under the general supervision of the Infrastructure Manager, the Database Administrator's role is to design, install, monitor, maintain, and optimize production databases. This individual is responsible for ensuring high levels of data availability and will be our primary expert on our Microsoft SQL Server database technology. The DBA is also responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing the database strategy that incorporates policies and procedures to ensure the integrity and availability of databases and the applications that interface with them.
The database administrator serves as an integral part of the IT Department and, as such, may be called upon to perform other IT duties in addition to those detailed here.
Develop & execute an overall database strategy, including architecture, standards and practices, licensing, alerts, and metrics.
Analyzes database needs and develops long term strategy for data needs and storage.
Develops, implements, and administers policies and procedures for ensuring the security and integrity of company databases, and limits database access as needed.
Work with developers to create common data interface layers and web services.
Designs and builds relational databases for data storage or processing. Develops strategies for warehouse implementation.
Helps establish and implement data quality standards and ease of integration.
Create logical and physical models for new database development and/or changes to existing databases.
Install and configure relevant network components to ensure database access as well as database consistency and integrity. Proactively monitor, respond to, and resolve database access and performance issues.
Monitor database objects within the database, including stored procedures, and implement efficiency and reliability improvements.
Design and implement redundant systems, policies, and procedures for disaster recovery and data archiving to ensure effective protection and integrity of data assets.
Monitor, optimize and allocate physical data storage for database systems.
Plan and coordinate data migrations between systems.
Develop, implement, and maintain change control and testing processes for modifications to databases.
Provide data analysis and support of analytical applications and provide expertise in data modeling.
Conduct research and make recommendations on database products and services in support of procurement and development efforts.
Perform database transaction and security audits.
Establish appropriate end-user database access control levels.
Schedule availability for occasional evening and week-end database maintenance tasks as needed.
Perform all functions of the job in a safe and conscientious manner
Supervises consultants who may be assigned to assist with the tasks listed above
Five years of previous experience in the maintenance of Microsoft SQL Server 2005 and 2008 databases.
Five years of experience as a database administrator in a rapidly changing and data intensive multi-server environment
10 years of total IT-related experience.
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science from an accredited college or university; or equivalent education/experience in the information technology field.
Certification in Microsoft SQL Server administration.
SQL Server, OLTP, OLAP, T-SQL, SSIS, SSAS, SSRS, RAID, SAN, DTS, ETL, GIS and XML web services.
Basic knowledge of web application architecture and data manipulation technologies such as web services, REST, JSON, SOAP, XSD, and XML is preferred.
Strong understanding of database structures, theories, principles, and practices.
Hands-on database tuning and troubleshooting experience.
Experience with data processing flowcharting techniques.
Project management experience.
Knowledge of applicable data privacy practices and laws.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Strong technical documentation skills.
Ability to conduct research into database issues, standards and products as required.
Highly self motivated and directed with a keen attention to detail.
Proven analytical and problem-solving abilities.
Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment.
Strong customer service orientation.
Experience working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.
