This position is located at the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center in Chicago , IL and is responsible for performing various administrative duties essential to the VA Police Service including operating a variety of office, communications and security equipment. Major duties and responsibilities include:

  • Operating computer terminals to input and retrieve data, store, edit and produce reports;
  • Receiving and compiling information from various sources related to police and emergency incidents;
  • Taking appropriate action regarding fire alarms, intrusion, duress and hold-up alarms and directing and/or notifying appropriate personnel;
  • Monitoring the operation of all communications/security and related electronic equipment including surveillance cameras;
  • Receiving and transmitting messages/information as a subscriber to the National Crime Information Center, Law Enforcement Agencies Data System (NCIC/LEADS) and the Chicago Police I-Clear computer systems;
  • Maintaining a daily journal to include all activities performed by the Security Assistant and VA Police Officers;
  • Responsible for the orderly flow of communication between the police control center, Chief, supervisors, and officers;
  • Entering and maintaining a variety of statistical databases, issuing parking decals and building access cards; and,
  • Performing other related duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Rotating shifts, Weekends and Holidays


To qualify for this position you must meet one of the following minimum requirements:

One full year specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-4 level in Federal service. This experience must be close to the work of this job and has given you the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities required to successfully perform the duties of a Security Assistant. Examples of specialized experience include working as a front desk person, receptionist, dispatcher, telephone operator, customer service representative or similar position entering data into databases, compiling data for and preparing a variety of reports; providing customer service and communicating with a variety of people, maintaining confidentiality of sensitive information. ~OR~

Successful completion of four (4) years of education above the high school level in any field which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. NOTE: If you select this option, you must submit a copy of your transcript (unofficial or official) with your application. ~OR~

Applicants will be ranked based on four quality groups, as follows:

Best qualified - applicants possessing experience that substantially exceeds the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors, and who are highly proficient in all requirements of the job and can perform effectively in the position;

Highly qualified - applicants possessing experience that exceeds the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors, and who are proficient in most of the requirements of the job;

Well qualified - applicants possessing experience that meets the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors, and who are proficient in some, but not all, of the requirements of the job; and

Qualified - applicants possessing experience and/or education that meets the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors.

After the vacancy announcement closes, reviewed applications are evaluated against the questionnaire responses and placed in the appropriate quality group. Qualified veterans will be afforded preference by being placed at the top of the appropriate quality group.
