LOCATION: Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium, 5400 N. Pearl St., Tacoma

HOURS: Part-time, 32 – 40 hours per week, not to exceed 1820 hour annually. Must be able to work weekends and holidays.

CLASSIFICATION: This position is classified as a part-time benefit eligible position. Enrollment in the WA state retirement system is mandatory. This position is an at-will position with no written or implied contractual agreement.


This position is responsible for the development and coordination of the year round youth volunteer program. Duties include recruitment, interview, supervision, program development, and evaluation of youth ranging in age from 11 yrs to 18 yrs. This position will also be responsible for assisting the Senior Education Specialist for volunteer services with coordination of the adult volunteer program, maintenance of volunteer and education databases, and basic administrative and clerical duties. Additional duties include creating and implementing interpretive presentations and informal interactions for the general public, coordinating and training interpretive staff and volunteers, special event coordination, and evaluation of interpretive programs. Other duties as assigned.


Minimum of two years of college including coursework in the natural sciences, education or related field required. 

Minimum of two years increasingly responsible experience managing and/or coordinating volunteers, preferably youth required. 

Must have experience creating and implementing education/interpretive programming, preferably in a zoo/aquarium or museum setting. 

Excellent communication and interpretation skills required. 

Must be flexible, detailed oriented, and able to manage multiple projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines. 

Must be able to work weekends and holidays as required. 

Must be proficient in Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Publisher). 

Must have the desire to work with large groups of zoo visitors in a conservation education facility. 

Must be customer service oriented with a positive, cheerful and professional attitude. 

Ability to work standing on feet for several hours at a time. 

Valid driver's license required.

Position classified as Part-time Benefits Eligible may be provided up to 80 hours of Paid Time Off (PTO) yearly which may prorated based on the month of hire. Employees in this classification are required to enroll in the Washington State's Public Employees Retirement System (PERS). Metro Parks Tacoma provides a contribution towards a health plan. Specific plans and contributions amounts will be determined on an annual basis by Metro Parks Tacoma.
