Essential Job Duties
Support the department’s Linux desktop computers, servers, and mobile devices. Work directly with faculty, staff, and students to maintain a positive end user experience. Evaluate, test, and deploy software for faculty, staff, research, and teaching computers within our Andrews File System ( AFS ) environment; via RPM ; and manually on individual machines as needed.
Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Computer Science Engineering or a closely related degree from an appropriately accredited institution; or a Bachelor’s Degree from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of experience in operations/systems work or closely related area; or an Associate’s Degree in Computer Information Technology, Computer Engineering Technology or Networking Technology from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of experience in operations/systems work or closely related area; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Departmental Required Skills
-Experience administering Linux servers (supporting RedHat Enterprise in particular) in a heterogeneous network environment.
-Experience with automation: scripting, testing and documentation of processes. Programming and version control concepts; in particular shell script and git.
-Advanced knowledge and experience working with client machines running RedHat Enterprise Linux.
-Knowledge of networking, including DHCP / DNS , network file systems and client-based firewalls.
-General hardware troubleshooting skills; Experience w/ hardware/driver support in Linux.
Software Packaging Skills:
-Knowledge of 32 and 64 bit application support on Linux
-Central and local software installation and deployment via Yum and network based installations.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
-3+ years of experience in a help desk environment.
-Certification in Linux Operating Systems.
-Demonstrated Experience with enterprise level desktop management tools including RHN and Puppet.
-Experience working with virtualized servers (Virtualbox, VMWare or Microsoft)
-Previous experience with Linux clusters.
