Evenings and weekends
Consistent with the Christian mission and Vision of the YMCA of Middle Tennessee, and in cooperation with other YMCA staff, under the direction of the Aquatics Director, the Swim Instructor is responsible for the instruction, leadership, supervision, control, and safety of all class participants. The Swim Instructor is responsible for the appearance, presentation, and working order of all equipment used for swim instruction. It is the Swim Instructors responsibility to observe and direct all class participants, and to provide feedback and appropriate correction as instructed or included in the job description.
Education / Experience Required:
Minimum 16 years of age
Demonstrate Intermediate swimming ability and successfully complete Aquatics Skills Check
Lifeguard and Swim Instructor certifications preferred
Pre-hire: YMCA application, new hire packet and Praesidium Child Abuse Detection / Prevention training
Upon hire: CEO parts 1 and 2
Within two weeks of hire: First Aid, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED & Emergency Oxygen, Blood Borne Pathogens
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required: This position requires an individual with the ability to remain alert, with no lapses in concentration. S/he must have the ability think in the abstract, solve problems, make decisions, instruct, evaluate, supervise, and remember. S/he must have mastered the skills s/he will teach in any aquatic activity and the ability to perform all swimming skills being taught. S/he must be able to communicate verbally, including projecting the voice across distances, and communicate swiftly and effectively with lifeguards and other staff. Physical Working Conditions: While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to stand; walk on uneven surfaces; sit; handle or feel objects; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; see; talk or hear; taste or smell. S/he must be able to lift up to 50 pounds. The employee may be exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time. The noise level is usually minimal to moderate.

Arrive to work on time, properly dressed (one-piece swim suit), and ready to teach with enthusiasm.
You are responsible for securing an approved substitute and notifying your supervisor of your absence / schedule change if you can not teach
Safety is priority! Ensure the safety of participants with proper precautions, facility set up, and by supervising and guiding students when conducting skill practice sessions
Prevent accidents and avoid dangerous situations; know, adhere to, and enforce all pool, slide, diving board rules, and all YMCA rules and policies among class participants; report any problems to the lifeguard on duty
Be focused on class participants at all times--socializing is not allowed. Do not turn your back to a class and do not leave a class unattended
Teach classes from in the water, and actively participate with the class Follow all appropriate procedures for scheduling and teaching private swim lessons
Prepare in advance organized Session Plans & Daily Lesson Plans to facilitate your classes; lessons should follow a logical progression, allowing for constructivist teaching methods & styles. Always keep a copy of up-to-date plans on site
Lead your class/group within the guidelines established by the YMCA of the USAs swim lesson programs. Maintain in theory (subject matters) and in practice (skill matters) the ultimate goal to develop the whole person; in spirit, mind and body
Provide verbal feedback to each participant consistently throughout each class. Communicate regularly with each participant and/or the participant's parent(s) about the performance, progress, goals and needs of the participant
Be attentive, be available to greet and connect with participants and their parents before and after class
Complete all required records and reports, including attendance records, progress reports, and accident/incident reports; check your roster and swimmer skills sheets each class day
Ensure proper and timely set ups and clean ups before and after classes, and store all instructional equipment in proper locations
Attend all required staff meetings/in-services
