Supervises operations projects and performs a variety of advanced level work and operates intermediate equipment and may coordinate crew assignments. Coordinates highway maintenance and repair projects and/or inspects mowing/snow removal contracts/other maintenance contracts and/or responsible for monitoring and verifying equipment rental usage contractors. Supervises operations projects consisting of a variety of intermediate level roadway work including ditching, asphalt paving, pipe installation, concrete finishing, layout of concrete forms, install piling, welding, excavation, hauling heavy equipment, etc. Operates various intermediate equipment, using advanced level skills, such as lowboy, tractor/semi-trailer, self-propelled paver, backhoe, front-end loader, grader, tandem truck, tow-paver, hydro seeder, roller, etc. Required to have a valid driver license and Class A CDL and Tankers Endorsement. May coordinate crew assignments and assume superintendent duties when superintendent is not present. Performs a variety of intermediate level roadway work such as cutting brush, flagging traffic, picking up litter, etc. Performs other duties as assigned.

Characteristics of the Class :
Coordinates highway maintenance and repair projects and/or inspects mowing/snow removal contracts and/or has responsibility for monitoring and verifying equipment rental usage contractors. May coordinate crew assignments. Responsible for implementing custodial security policies and procedures in the use of inmate crews on roadways. Performs advanced level work in roadway or roadside maintenance operations. Operates intermediate equipment such as backhoe, front-end loader, grader, tandem truck, tow paver, hydro seeder; and performs other duties as required.

Typical Working Conditions and Unique Physical Requirements :
Incumbents in this classification typically perform their work at a highway maintenance facility, at work sties throughout the assigned work area, and when necessary, district wide. Positions in this class must possess the ability to walk, sit, stoop and bend. Must be able to lift and carry 50 pounds. Works extended hours and be outside during inclement weather. Must be able to respond to emergencies.
