Appropriated funds for initial 2 year appointment with subsequent partial external funding expected, tenure track, 11-month, renewable contingent on performance. To begin approximately September 2013. Position may serve as Chair of Surgery; however, appointment as Chair is dependent upon the Dean's approval and continuation is contingent upon satisfactory performance. Duties and Responsibilities
  • Serve as a clinical and academic resource: Deliver lectures or conferences/colloquia, problem-based learning (PBL), clinical skills, and laboratories in field(s) of expertise. Facilitate student/resident/fellow-centered learning, encourage student/resident/fellow professional growth, and demonstrate preparation and skill as a teacher.
  • May serve in a leadership capacity within the department, faculty practice plan, and JABSOM, e.g. guide and/or support clinical quality improvement initiatives, curriculum development and faculty evaluations; serve as lead author for clinical services grant/contract proposals; oversee evaluation reports for clinical, academic and administrative services; and, align departmental vision and mission with that of JABSOM.
  • Serve as a mentor for students, residents, fellows and faculty and promote a strong clinical faculty development program based upon M-series promotion goals.
  • Participation in key University committees providing administrative and educational leadership.
  • Supervise medical students, residents and fellows in clinical care.
  • Oversee and contribute to the organization and administration of educational or training experiences for medical students, residents, or fellows.
  • Participate in continuing medical education programs.
  • Conduct and publish research in the areas affecting human health, patient care, or methods and techniques of medical education. Build a vigorous departmental research program with extramural funding.
  • Work with affiliate organizations and specialized groups to advance to goals and mission of the department and JABSOM.
  • Develop a multi-source revenue stream to provide financial underpinning for the department.
  • Address responsibilities as outlined in the JABSOM Clinical Chair’s Roles & Responsibilities document, if appointed as Chair.
  • Other scholarly duties as assigned.
  • Minimum Qualifications
  • MD degree or equivalent medical degree from a medical school of recognized standing.
  • Board certification in a surgical specialty of the American Board of Medical Specialties.
  • Board re-certification when appropriate.
  • Must have a current Hawaii medical license or be eligible to apply.
  • Evidence of skill in tutoring and delivery of lectures and conference/colloquia, and expertise as a resource person.
  • Evidence of research productivity is required. When primary activity has been in group research, evidence of independent responsibility for substantial and recognizable sections of the group’s work must be demonstrated.
  • Evidence of scholarship productivity is required. When primary activity has been in clinical teaching, regular presentations of scholarly abstracts at local, regional, and/or national meetings, primary authorship of peer-reviewed medical case reports, or primary/co-authorship in peer-reviewed journals in medical education, clinical discipline, or academic administration should be demonstrated.
  • Participation in research studies involving clinical trials, community- based research, or clinical services and/or intervention.
  • Mentor for graduate students, medical students, residents, or fellows.
  • Minimum of four (4) years at the rank of Assistant Professor or appointment at Associate Professor level at a comparable institution.
  • In Addition to the Minimum Qualifications for Associate Professor: Four (4) years in the rank of Associate Professor or appointment at the Professor level at a comparable institution.
  • Proven ability as a teacher, scholar, investigator, administrator, and/or clinician.
  • Documented participation in the scholarly and academic and/or clinical affairs of the medical school, University, professional organizations, and/or hospitals.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, and supervise academic activities and to undertake a variety of teaching, committee, administrative, and/or clinical assignments.
  • Proven capacity for leadership in the professional and scholarly community.
  • Recognition as an outstanding academician, scholar, or clinician with a national and/or international reputation is expected.
  • Experienced mentor of junior faculty.
  • Evidence of research or scholarly activity with regular publication in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Demonstration of national recognition in a field of research or clinical specialty.
  • Desirable Qualifications
  • Evidence of successful competitive funding at the national level or extramural funding of clinical trials, clinical services, or educational training grants and/or contracts.
  • Capable of leading a research/scholarship group, provide research/scholarship training for junior faculty and/or graduate students, and/or provide leadership in research studies involving clinical trials, community-based research, or clinical services and intervention.
