WHI DBA position (DB Mgr I)

Job Summary:

The Women's Health Initiative (WHI) is a long-term national health study that has focused on strategies for preventing heart disease, breast and colorectal cancer, and osteoporotic fractures in postmenopausal women. These chronic diseases are the major causes of death, disability, and frailty in older women of all races and socioeconomic backgrounds.

WHI is looking for someone who is well-rounded technically, is an experienced DBA in Oracle Database 11g multi-instance environments, works both independently and collaboratively, and is willing to contribute in areas outside of the typical corporate DBA role. The WHI Database Team supports the core WHI study as well as dozens of ancillary and related studies. Our mission is to collect and maintain the highest quality data in support of this important research, from application design through the delivery of analytic data sets.


  • Install, upgrade, and patch Oracle RDBMS (11g R1/R2/R3) per product/security lifecycles
  • Manage Backup and Recovery Management solutions
  • Troubleshoot Oracle RDBMS related issues using diagnostic and performance tools
  • Work with Oracle to address the issues raised by Oracle SRs
  • Proactively monitor and perform health-check for the databases
  • Monitor and maintain database security and database software per standard security practices
  • Database performance tuning
  • Implement Oracle database instances for the development and production environments
  • Evaluates releases of Oracle and its tools, and third party products to ensure that the environment is running the products that are most appropriate
  • Lead the planning and execution of creating annual and ad-hoc “snapshot” database instances
  • Contribute to non-DBA areas as needed



  • B.S. in computer science or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years of Oracle Database Administration experience.
  • Solid experience with Oracle DB on Windows Server.
  • Worked with latest Oracle database technologies, including 11g.
  • Working knowledge of Oracle DBA best practices (e.g., oracle internals, schema management, index optimization, and use of hints).
  • Experience in Capacity monitoring and management capabilities.
  • Experience with various Disaster Recovery Practices.
  • Experience in SQL, SQL*Plus scripts, PL/SQL, Data Pump and ETL processes.
  • Strong verbal, written and inter-personal communication skill.
  • Desire to work in a unique and highly flexible data management and application development environment in which data modeling, design and DDL execution are shared among team members, many of whom have DBA privileges.
  • Highly motivated to solve problems individually and efficiently.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and adapt to shifting priorities.
  • Willingness to contribute in non-DBA areas and cross-train on Weblogic Application Server.
  • Strong commitment to the integrity and quality of the data as priority one.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Oracle Fusion Middleware 11g running Forms and Reports.
  • Some knowledge of J2EE Application Server architecture.
  • Weblogic Server, Glassfish.
  • Background in Data Warehouse concepts / strategies.
  • Strong query and database tuning skills.
  • Capacity monitoring and management capabilities.
  • Experience with various Disaster Recovery Practices.
  • Experience with MySQL
