Reviews, comprehends and complies with all SOP's and quality assurance standards pertaining to specific area. Cares for and maintains laboratory animals in accordance with Animal Welfare Act, the “Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, NIH policies and guidelines and other applicable regulations and policies.
Serves as central point of contact for NIA-IRP shipping and receiving of rodent research models and laboratory rabbits.
Process requests for rodent import/ transfers, Rederivation and cryopreservation. FUTURE
Oversee, assign and coordinate all technical requests and procedures
Coordinate rodent imports from non-approved vendors and assist with the preparation of required documents for exportation of rodents, nationally and internationally.
Schedule with the Attending Veterinarian to certify health certificates for animals being exported.(coincides with imports and exports)
Contact sending facilities to obtain health status documents and provide to the AV.
Track import and export dates through a shared information system (coincides with imports and exports) and coordinate quarantine space for incoming animals requiring separate housing.
Receive incoming animals, check all documentation and either deliver animals to the appropriate holding rooms or notify the appropriate person of their arrival i.e. animals placed into quarantine.
Collect and ship all quarantine samples for processing. Sample collection is done via blood collection on rodents. Ships out for testing. Retro Orbital, submandicular procedures
Actively interacts with Project Officers, facility veterinarian(s) and investigators as required to solve customer requests, inquiries, and complaints.
Package animal products for transportation in accordance with applicable SOP’s.
Maintain and generate reports, logs and spreadsheets as required.(import/export) PM completes
Maintain and assist the Database Administrator with database support.

Maintains required attendance level and adheres to work schedule in accordance with required staffing levels in order to ensure that assigned duties are completed.

- Education: High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required. Associate’s degree in Veterinary Technology or equivalent college level program preferred.
- Experience: Three to five years experience in a laboratory animal facility. Twoyears of technical experience as detailed in the essential duties and responsibilities section.
- Certification/Licensure: Achieve Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification within one year of eligibility.
