Appointment to this position, however, will not convey permanent status in the Federal service and will be for a period not to exceed 13 months with possible extensions up to a total of 4 years without further competition.KEY REQUIREMENTS:Applicants must be U.S. Citizens.Suitable for Federal employment, as determined by background investigation.Overnight travel of 3-4 nights per month may be required.Selectee may be subject to serving a one-year trial period.Selectee must provide a valid drivers license and safe driving record.More requirements are listed under Qualifications and Other Information.Back to top DutiesAdditional Duty Location Info:1 vacancy - Moab, UTAs a Supervisory Biologist serving as the Lab Manager at the Canyonlands Field Station of the Southwest Biological Science Center some of your specific duties will include:- Conducting project analyses and reviewing results of studies or investigations addressing the impacts of soil surface disturbance and climate change on soil and plant resources and general arid land and plant communities. - Assisting in the formulation of plans for major plant and soil ecological projects to investigate novel biological science problems and in developing estimates of personnel, equipment, materials and schedules required to carry out the projects- Deploying data-collection systems.

Manipulating data and conducting statistical analysis of data collected during soils and plant studies. Analyzing and resolving technical problems for which current information is inconclusive, or is in the form of suppositions or theories regarding the effectiveness of certain treatments. - Coordinating activities for both field and laboratory experiments; keeping laboratory organized and all equipment and machinery in working order; instructing, advising and training project technicians, biologists and volunteers in techniques for data management and analysis; organizing large field crews for extended visits to remote sites.- Serving as primary liaison between senior research scientists and lab and field staff.- Exercising a broad range of first line supervisory authorities and responsibilities over the lab and field staff made of 10 to 14 permanent, term, temporary and seasonal employees.Back to top Qualifications and EvaluationsQUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: For information on basic qualifications, which includes information on whether you may substitute education for specialized experience, please click on the following: http://www.usgs.gov/ohr/oars/quals/0401.html .In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must meet the following to qualify for the GS-11 level:In addition to the basic education requirements as stated above, applicants must have three full years of progressively higher level graduate level education **OR Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree.

**OR One year of specialized experience at or equal to the next lower grade level.Examples of experience at the GS-09 level work may include: 1) participation in the planning and execution of biological studies with limited number of variables; 2) performing established, standardized tests and analyses on a broad range of biological samples; 3) conducting biological studies using established fact finding procedures. For examples 1-3, assignments were made with the objectives, priorities, and deadlines defined. The work was planned and carried out independently in accordance with proven techniques, methods, and practices.
