POSITION SUMMARY:
The primary responsibilities of the Histocompatibility & Immunogenetics Laboratory’s Senior Technologist includes, HLA typing using molecular techniques, Flow Cytometry crossmatching, Luminex antibody screening/identification, Flow Immunophenotyping, Quality Control of reagents, equipment, Quality Assurance and Continuing Quality Improvement monitors. This position is full-time day shift with rotating 24 hour On-Call coverage. Senior Technologist is responsible for the daily operation of the laboratory to include helping the Assistant Supervisor/Director is to prepare and write procedures. To assures the compliance with Federal and State regulations. Senior technologist with technologist is responsible for maintaining adequate stock of all reagents and supplies for laboratory.

The position requires a high level of competency and effective interpersonal and professional relations and effective leadership skills. Generate strategies for improving HLA testing operations through active participation in continuous quality improvement philosophies.

POPULATION SERVED:
Core competencies will be assessed primarily on the following population(s) served:

Transplant Recipients, Living Donors Diseased Donors and Diseases Association’s HLA Testing.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1.

Involvement in design and development of novel procedures and implement new techniques with Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics

Laboratory Supervisor, Assistant Supervisor as required by HLA Laboratory Director

2.

Maintains adequate stock of reagents and supplies of laboratory.

3.

Assists supervisor and assistant supervisor, train new technologists and direct technologists.

4.

Evaluates new/existing procedures, equipment, QC and determine its quality and closely monitor its effectiveness.

5.

Maintains proper documentation and corrective action during all aspects of HLA testing.

6.

Assists with the preparation of annual capital budgets and recommendation for personal requirements.

7.

Participates in CAP/ASHI Proficiency testing; reviewing Surveys, HLA testing results, QC/QA testing of reagents and equipment with HLA laboratory Supervisor.

8.

Involved in 24 hours On-Call for Decease Donor’s HLA typing and Flow Crossmatching.

9.

Takes all reasonable steps to ensure that the HLA Laboratory Testing is in compliance with all

applicable federal, state, and local laws and private and government accreditation and regulatory standards, including F.D.A., CAP, CLIA, ASHI, UNOS, CMS, J.C.A.H.O., O.S.H.A. and all laws relating to laboratory employee health and safety, fire safety, and storage, handling, and of chemical, biological and radioactive materials.

10.

Works with assistant supervisor and technician to utilize special scientific skills in HLA testing current procedures and developing new procedures.

11.

Takes all reasonable steps to implement, maintain, and monitor all policies and procedures for the laboratory with assistant supervisor and supervisor.

12.

Participates in continuing education activities relative to each category for which ASHI accreditation is sought.

13.

In collaboration with Director, reviews and responds to any complaints and grievances as they relate to the HLA testing services, and recommend corrective action, as appropriate.

14.

In conjunction with the Director, identifies problems in Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics as it relates to clinical outcomes and develops and implements new testing.

15.

Collaborates with Director and supports the development of new HLA testing services which are financially viable for LPMC.

16.

In conjunction with Supervisor/Director, Monitors continuing education for laboratory and Transplant Center staff.

17.

Performs proficiency testing in the laboratory with assistant supervisor and supervisor.

18.

Performs quality assurance and quality control activities as assign by Director.

19.

Involved in troubleshooting of technical problems in HLA testing.

20.

Participates along with assistant supervisor, supervisor and Director in annual operating budget and capital equipment budget processes, reviews and supports operational goals to meet department financial goals.

21.

Maintains current policies and procedures and manuals required by various regulatory agencies and enforces departmental compliance with JCAHO standards.

22.

Attends monthly department meeting and continuing education meeting to keep up with current knowledge of HLA testing.

23.

Demonstrates high ethical standards in business practices. Actively supports organizational goals and changes as they occur. Communicates goals in positive, supportive manner.

Qualifications

REQUIRED LICENSURE AND/OR CERTIFICATION:
ABHI Certification in Histocompatibility Testing

PREFERRED LICENSURE AND/OR CERTIFICATION:
Clinical Laboratory Testing certification(s)

REQUIRED EDUCATION:
Under graduate degree or higher in Clinical Laboratory Science or Biological Sciences

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:
Three to Over Five or more years of HLA testing experiences including HLA-DNA SSP, rSSO typing, Luminex PRA and Flow Cytometry Crossmatches.

Ability to work as a team member within a team to ensure quality patients’ HLA testing.

Ability to be self-directed and highly organized.

Interpersonal skills to interact effectively with individuals of diverse management hierarchies and cultural backgrounds. Demonstrates creativity, foresight and judgment in anticipating and solving problems.

Exceptional verbal and written skills.

Ability to work effectively with all levels of administration and medical staff personnel.

Current computer/word processing and data analysis skills.
