We are recruiting an exceptional Command Officer to contribute to the organization, working under the direction of the Fire Chief, to fill this essential role and provide direction for duties and activities associated with operations and support services. This new position, established in 2012 is a unique opportunity for a rising leader to impact and support the Mountain View Fire Department. The Deputy Fire Chief will play an integral role planning, organizing and directing a wide variety of general and special staff assignments; serve as a key member of the Fire Department's senior management team; supervise of Battalion Chiefs assigned to operations; and act on behalf of the Fire Chief in his absence.
Our model candidate will match the Fire Chief’s strong philosophy of continuous growth, succession planning and positive labor management relations. The Deputy Chief must be a professional who can demonstrate the ability to think strategically to anticipate and approach issues consistent with the Fire Department’s mission. This individual will be adept at supervising and directing a large staff and effectively managing emergency scene resources. Interaction with a variety of City staff, from subordinates to executives, as well as community groups requires a candidate with excellent communication skills. Candidates should possess a minimum of 5 years of broad and increasingly responsible experience in fire suppression, fire prevention, hazardous materials and emergency medical care work, with at least 2 years supervisory experience at a Battalion Chief level. Candidates must have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in fire administration or fire technology, business administration, public administration or a closely related field and must possess, or obtain, a valid California driver’s license within 30 days of appointment. In addition, a State Board of Fire Services (or equivalent) certification as a Fire Officer is highly desirable.

The City of Mountain View Fire Department mission is to save lives and property, protect the environment and minimize the risk of fire and natural disaster by translating service requests into action and investing in education, training and prevention. Our department has been providing services to the community since it was founded on April 1, 1874 as a volunteer fire brigade. Today, the Mountain View Fire Department provides services to our 74,000 residents in a 12 square mile area and responds to over 4,800 calls each year. The Department operates out of five stations with five engine companies; one rescue unit, one ladder truck, and one cross staffed HAZ MAT unit with 86 full-time personnel, including Suppression Division, Fire & Environmental Protection Division, and Administrative Division employees. Based on the application screening, those candidates with the most relevant qualifications will be invited to an oral interview (weighted 100 percent), tentatively scheduled for the week of January 13, 2014. Additional interviews may be required. Depending on the number of applications, the above process may be altered.
