Assistant Transportation Manager

Distribution Center.

In the role you will provide a transportation/logistics support function to Family Dollar (Distribution Centers and Stores) to positively impact profitability. You will manage the company delivery process to ensure merchandise arrives at the stores in a timely and efficient manner meeting Family Dollar quality standards. You will also manage the rolling assets of the company, supervise and monitor the processes and team of associates to ensure government and corporate standards are met.

Principal Duties & Responsibilities:
Manage inbound/outbound expenses and delivery service through monitoring and maintaining the carrier/driver ratio, utilization, driver turns, trailer cube and area miles reduction.

Communicate with Store Operations to address and resolve any delivery issues.

Direct the onsite Carrier Managers to ensure carrier implementation and adherence with the Family Dollar guidelines, policies, procedures and specific contractual agreements.

Communicate and collaborate with the onsite Carrier Managers to identify and resolve equipment and driver issues/challenges during deliveries/backhauls.

Assist in hiring, training, cross-training and development of clerical support and backup staff to uphold an efficient, consistent and smooth running 24-hour transportation department.

Communicate with the Transportation Site Manager to address and resolve any challenges and major issues.

Inspect and track equipment & property damages and document/track carrier claims processing expeditiously in order to receive prompt and accurate payments.

Audit Outbound invoices, ensuring accuracy as it relates to miles, stops and rates; complying with SOX process documentation.

Maintain up to date knowledge on Transportation, Government and Family Dollar regulations through industry & DOT publications and Family Dollar Website.

Other duties as assigned.


Our ideal candidate will have a minimum of 4 to 6 years of multi stop Transportation management experience, preferably in a retail, grocery or drug store environment. Must be flexible to work multi shifts including nights and weekends. Excellent oral, written communication and interpersonal skills are key for all positions, as well as strong planning and organization skills. Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook required. Knowledge of transportation systems is helpful. Associates degree or higher preferred.
