TITLE:SPECIAL NEEDS AIDEQUALIFICATIONS:1.High School diploma.2.Proven ability to work with children with a variety of handicapping conditions.3.Possesses a combination of skills to include record keeping and operating office machines.4.Proven ability to work in a polite and friendly manner and relate to a variety of constituencies, including but not limited to, administrators, parents, teachers, students, other school staff and school visitors.5.Possesses good communication skills both verbal and written.6.Demonstrated aptitude or competence for assigned responsibilities.7.Possesses a sense of humor.8.Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the School Department may find appropriate and acceptable.REPORTS TO:Director of Special Education and/or Principal and assigned special education teacher.JOB GOALS:1.To assist the special education teacher in providing a well organized, smoothly functioning class environment in which students can take full advantage of the instructional program and available resource materials.2.To work closely with one or a few handicapped pupils on a regular basis in an effort to provide them with the physical help and emotional support they need to gain as much benefit from the district’s education program as possible.PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES (include but are not limited to):1. Assists the special education teacher as needed. 2. Works on educational tasks with one or more students as designated by the supervising teacher.3.Performs various clerical duties including, but not limited to, running off masters and other appropriate materials, collecting money for lunch, milk, etc.
4.Assists with bulletin boards and preparation of classroom displays. 5.Corrects student work which is objective in nature and under the direction of the classroom teacher. 6.Assists in the supervision of students during instructional activities, transitional periods and at recess. 7.Maintains confidentiality of student records.
8.Respects the confidential nature of the classroom and will refer to the classroom teacher if a problem arises. 9.Accepts work assignments with any student(s) in the special education classroom as designated.10.Assists the supervising teacher in setting and maintaining reasonable standards of classroom behavior and performance.11.Assists supervising teacher in recording relevant data on student performance and behavior.12.Escorts children to and from transportation in a safe and responsible manner as directed by the supervising teacher.13.Reports all student accidents and/or incidents to the supervising teacher immediately or as soon as possible.14.Performs such other duties or tasks and assumes such other responsibilities as may be designated or assigned by immediate supervisors.The above statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by employees assigned to this classification.
