The duties of the Signalman / Assistant Signalman include the construction, installation, repair, maintenance, testing, and inspection of signal systems, devices and appliances. These include automatic block signal systems, traffic control systems, train stop, train control and cab signal systems, interlocking systems, rail-highway grade crossing protection, automatic classification yards, defect detectors, broken flange detectors, and other similar devices, appliances, and systems.
Knowledge, Skill and Ability Requirements:
Reading comprehension (general and technical)
Planning and organizing
Problem solving and decision making
Knowledge of safety rules
Works as a member of a team
Visual color discrimination
Understanding visual symbols and displays
Must possess a valid drivers' license and possess or be capable of obtaining a Commercial Driver's License (CDL). Work is performed outdoors much of the time. Required to wear safety apparel and. Travel to locations other than the primary work location is frequent and required. Work shifts will include non-standard hours, which may include variable shifts, overtime, permanent night shifts, weekends or holidays. Assistant Signalman candidates will complete a 2-year apprenticeship program which will train the Assistant Signalman to perform all of the duties of a Signalman.
