The Assistant Professor is a member of the ranked faculty with an intermediate academic rank who has demonstrated achievement in the areas of teaching, research, and professional service appropriate to the discipline. The Assistant Professor’s teaching responsibilities are assigned by the academic department head and may include serving as an academic advisor. The Assistant Professor engages in scholarly activities beyond those associated with teaching and is expected to demonstrate professional productivity in research, based upon the availability of resources and consistent with the mission of the University.
Description of Primary Duties
The Assistant Professor is a member of the ranked faculty who will demonstrate achievement in the areas of teaching, research, and professional service appropriate to the discipline. The primary responsibility of the Assistant Professor will be teaching undergraduate content methods courses in a growing, field-based program with an interdisciplinary team of methods faculty. The Assistant Professor will teach undergraduate and graduate courses in elementary education including content methods commensurate with the applicant’s content training and experience (e.g. science methods, mathematics methods) and/or related courses face-to-face on the Springfield campus and/or off-campus locations, through distance learning or on-line as fits the needs of the department and the candidate’s expertise. The Assistant Professor will develop and maintain a collaborative relationship with public school constituents and provide clinical supervision for elementary practicum students, interns and student teachers as needed. Consideration will be given to applicants with experience with diverse/or at-risk populations. Knowledge of the teacher work sample as a teacher performance assessment is helpful. The Assistant Professor will engage scholarly activities beyond those associated with teaching and will be expected to demonstrate professional productivity in research and grant proposal development by having an active research agenda, publishing in peer reviewed national and international journals, and presenting research at national conferences.
Minimum Acceptable Qualifications
The minimum acceptable qualifications for the position of Assistant Professor are prescribed in the Faculty Handbook. The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds is required.
Earned doctorate from an accredited university in Elementary Education, Teaching and Learning, Curriculum and Instruction, Education or closely related field. ABD with expected completion by August 12, 2013, start date will be considered. Applicants must have at least three years of demonstrated excellence in teaching in grades 1-6 in public or nationally accredited schools preferably with learners from culturally and/or linguistically diverse populations; established or emerging research agenda with demonstrated potential for developing a strong record of published scholarship in teacher education; demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with various constituencies throughout the university and public school communities with a strong commitment to inclusive excellence and working with diverse and/or underserved populations.
