Conduct research on renewable and distributed energy systems and integration with electrical power systems. This research would focus on conducting analysis, developing models, prototyping equipment for distributed generation equipment that utilize photovoltaics, wind, fuel cells, batteries, turbines, and inverters. Conducts simulation studies for a variety of scenarios of interconnections of distributed generation and electrical distribution systems. Investigates the impact of distributed generation on electrical distribution system performance such as voltage regulation and protection schemes.

Provides reports on technical work and input to technical publications and presentations. Publishes results in technical journals/conference proceedings; presents work at conferences, symposia, and review meetings. Follows all Environment, Safety, and Health policies and procedures to ensure and maintain a safe working environment.

Interacts with and provides regular project reports to government and/or industrial clients.

Job Duties
Duties would include research on renewable and distributed energy systems distribution and transmission systems. This research would focus on developing distribution models of existing and future systems that utilize standard generation equipment combined with technologies such as photovoltaics, wind, fuel cells, batteries, turbines, and inverters, and advanced power electronic systems. Conducts simulation studies for a variety of scenarios of interconnections of distributed generation and electrical distribution systems. Investigates the impact of distributed generation on electrical distribution system performance such as voltage regulation and protection schemes. Conducts model verification testing and analysis of modeled and fielded systems. Interacts with and provides regular project reports to government and/or industrial clients. Provides reports on technical work and input to technical publications and presentations. Publishes results in technical journals/conference proceedings; presents work at conferences, symposia, and review meetings. Follows all Environment, Safety, and Health policies and procedures to ensure and maintain a safe working environment.

Required Education and Experience
Relevant PhD and 4 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience.

Or, relevant Master's Degree and 7 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience.

Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree and 9 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Attributes
Applies extensive engineering technical expertise, and has full knowledge of other related disciplines. Considered a technical resource.

Demonstrates leadership in several areas of team, task or project lead responsibilities. Demonstrated experience in management of projects. Excellent writing, interpersonal and communication skills.

Additional Required Knowledge, Skills and Attributes
Demonstrated technical knowledge of engineering practices, procedures, and techniques.

Must be proficient with Distribution and electrical system simulation programs such as Simulink, /SimPower Systems, PowerwWorld, PSSE, PSLF, Synergee, and be willing to learn others.

Must be proficient in Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Must have the ability to create technical drawings with tools such as AutoCAD and Visio.

Ability to work well in a team or independently with limited supervision.

Demonstrated excellence in applying knowledge and know-how in using modern software and hardware tools to solve real world problems.

Required attributes include: strong verbal, presentation, and technical writing abilities, sound interpersonal communication.

The candidate should also be creative, innovative, and adaptable.

Preferred Qualifications
PhD degree in electrical engineering with specialty in power systems and power electronics.

Experience with power system design, simulation, and operation with distributed generation and energy storage is preferred.

Experience with DSP design tools, Matlab, and /Simulink and /SimPower Systems.

Familiarity with the HOMER, DEW, GRIDLAB-D, and OPEN-DSS design tools.

Experience with the design, simulation, and testing of real-time control systems for use in distributed generation systems.

Experience with RTDS and/or Opal RT systems.

Experience with the development of advanced visualization tools and methods

Experience with API interfaces to common power-flow packages.

Engineer Intern (EI) or Professional Engineering (PE) License is preferred.

Experience working with advanced distribution applications at a utility company is highly desirable.
